Earlier in my HAC I shared pictures of this old bull hard horned busted up in the winter. Here is his new growth of velvet for this summer.

This past week we did our annual trip up to the highcountry to relax and enjoy the family heritage of the cabin my wife's great grandfather, Nels Nelson, built over 70 years ago.

The trail up was just as thick and steep as always.

After several hours of hiking it is always a pleasure to see the cabin and the highcountry basin it is nestled in.

The first evening, Cody did some boot skiing on the snowslide and got going a little too fast and then did a cart wheel at the end. Luckily, these were his only battle scars.

Jesse spent many hours out rowing the boat and fishing hard. The lake was stocked by the family back in the 40's and still has a good population of rainbows.

Most of the fish in the lake are small panfryers but Jesse caught the biggest fish I've ever seen come out of this lake. For this high mountain lake, this is a monster.

I spent a lot of time behind the glass.
DSC_0880_zpsd1ed0eeb.jpg

I did manage to glass up one big billy who mossied over the mountain directly above the cabin. About an hour later another lone goat appeared on another mountain. We all took turns with the binos as we watched him move effortlessly on the cliffs.

P8250124_zps42086e73.jpg

We watched him bed on a ledge and I thought he was in the perfect position to get a good close up photoshoot if he was still there in the morning. As evening got later, I caught movement on a slide above the second lake in the basin. This time it was a sow grizzly and her two fur ball cubs. We all took turns watching them with the binos as they worked their way up and over a mountain pass. The big ol' silvertip moved with the ease of a mountain goat on the rock. Was a pretty cool sight to see for the entire family. Back in the early days, Shannon's great grandfather used to hunt grizzly in this same basin. Looking through the logbooks it's been a very long time since someone documented a sighting. As they worked their way over the top, I glassed back to where the goat had been bedded and he was long gone. Snuck out the back door when she was underneath him. Guess the close up photoshoot will have to wait another year.

The season has been pretty slow thus far but we have been making the best of it. With the Any Buck Season winding down at the end of Oct, Cody pulled the pin on this muley buck.
