Bear hunting ban proposed in Kalifornia

Dear Assemblywoman Dahle,

I recently became aware of Senate Bill 252, prohibition of hunting of bears, introduced in the California State Senate. I vehemently oppose this prohibition; as an outdoorsman, I see bear numbers increasing exponentially in our Northern California forests. I believe the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife should be managing our game numbers using data provided by game biologists, not from the emotions of Democrat city-slickers and their lobbyists. The prohibition of bear hunting will be just one more assault on the freedoms of outdoors enthusiasts of our increasingly Socialist state. As an avid deer hunter, I am well aware of the plummeting conditions of our deer herds, which can be attributed to laws such as this one. Bears have no real predator other than man, and as such will proliferate our forests and further deplete our other natural resources. Please consider what I’ve said here and know that I speak loudly for other outdoorsmen and women across the state. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Rex Woodward

Way to go and thank you.

If we all reach out and deliver this in our own words, it'll help tremendously. It's also gonna matter if folks can comment during any hearings this may make it to during the process. If it's Zoom, it may be easier for many of us to contribute.

Make sure to be civil and polite when writing in, and while I agree we are going down the path of a socialist state It might be a bad idea to label people/politicians. Just my 2 cents. I commented politely on Scott Wieners IG (who wrote/introduced this bill) and I think the more the better. We are up against a giant in the humane society and similar groups who I’m sure are finacially behind this bill. I cannot believe this might pass especially when the best thing for bears and this state big game populations would be to do the opposite and open a spring bear season at the very least. So depressing to be a sportsmen in this world today...

This is gonna be tough, especially with the current occupant in the Guv's office. But, we know what will happen for sure if we sit idly back!

We really do need a spring season here.

All part of the leftist agenda. I knew this was coming once they outlawed bobcat hunting. Next will be another less popular game species such as quail or maybe even deer. Might even reintroduce wolves to bolster the existing population if they can prove they were here.

Once they ban hunting they will claim all scoped rifles are "Tactical" or "sniper" weapons. Please register and pay your $200 annual fee for each scoped rifle you own.

I start scouting the high country in June and July and the amount of bears I see everyday is astonishing! It would be such a good hunt to have a spring bear season. It would be one of the best places in the country to hunt trophy boars just based of my own experience seeing multiple mature boars per scouting trip.

Agreed! I've seen some impressive bears myself that time of year scouting for deer as well. Probably a pipe dream though. Here we are discussing a bill that would outright ban Bear hunting and we're talking about expanding existing seasons. SMH. Don't that go to show how shitty California politics can be?

It really is the worst situation for us here. They keep chipping away and I used to laugh and say no way they would ever ban deer hunting here but I actually think it’s possible in the next 10 years, the more I think about it. My good friend is a life long commercial fisherman off the coast and sits on a lot of boards, goes to high up meetings with government, fish and wildlife, non profits, etc. He says we could be looking at a non profit ran entire system here in this state in the coming years. Basically, the animal rights groups (I wont name the one) have so much money and influence here they might actually dictate season structures and limits or at least have an even larger influence on them. They just about literally own the department of fish and wildlife. It’s terrifying...

Its sad to say that we are rapidly losing many of our rights in this country and bear hunting is now added to the list. These politicians are emboldened and don't care what we think and many of those in office that should be standing up and speaking out are hiding under their desks,

Very true.

and they are walking around licking up newborn fawns........

That is not just my opinion, F&G proved it on their Round Valley deer study that summers on the west slope.......

Not unique to Round Valley. This has been proven multiple times and beyond fawns, they bully lions off kills, which means that have to go kill another deer.

It's my understanding that deer is in 2 years, not 10. This is part 2 of 4, with bobcats last year as part 1. Not first hand information but reliable nonetheless.

If you’re not a member of a state hunting organization that has regional reps that deal directly with politicians and/or F&W organizations, you may want to....sadly it may be too late.

Really good point. I'm involved at so many levels, but I'm just one person and I can generally rally the troops when big stuff happens, but they don't really hop in when hound hunting, bobcats, etc., were getting nailed (I don't hunt with hounds, I don't hunt bobcats). It is WAY bigger than that. I think they are finally believing me with this bear ban.

Another issue is whenever a lion or bobcat kills a deer, it eats and covers it up. Bears then come along and push the lion or bobcat off the kill. Due to the overpopulation of bears, bobcats and lions the deer herds are getting hammered hard. A lion needs about 1 deer a week to survive, as a result of too many bears both lions and bobcats have to kill even more deer.

And if this passes deer hunting will be next. Make no doubt.

Ok....that is exactly what he said.....BUT...it didn’t hurt to say it again...I don’t think many realize how bears can indirectly kill deer.

We just cannot let this bill pass, whether you hunt bear or not. These unhinged boys and girls are just trying to get hunting banned in our lifetime by incrementally taking away the less popular outdoor options, such as use of hounds for bear hunting, bobcat hunting, and trapping to name a few.

If this were to pass it would be pretty easy for them to go after deer next since wieners reason for this bear ban is because of climate change and it’s mean. Nothing would stop them from saying deer are hurting from global warming and it’s mean.

I think anyone with half a brain knows that their science claim is B.S. But hell, why let the facts get in the way of their anti-hunting narrative?

A lot of people living in the concrete jungles do not possess the “half of a brain” we need to reason with them. The 1/2 brain they do possess functions to allow survival in the city.

Private timber companies won't like it either. Bears kill a lot of trees, especially Redwood trees. They strip the bark off of young trees in the spring to get the sap.

Green Diamond will pay to have your bear processed if you kill a bear on their property and then give you permission to deer hunt on top of that.

Your voices have been heard! After 21,000 hunters used their voices, SB 252 has been withdrawn for consideration. In California, our 235,000 licensed hunters play an integral role in supporting our habitat and wildlife. Around 1/4 of the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s budget alone is paid through hunting and fishing licenses and taxes on firearms and gear.
Bear tags generated $1.39 million in revenue last year for the state’s wildlife agency. That money again goes into the big game management fund that supports habitat preservation for bears and other species including deer, elk, pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep in our State. #AD1

GREAT JOB EVERYONE--you did it!!!! Thank you to all who took the time to voice your concerns, sign petitions and called your representatives. They heard you!

Also a good time to join a state level hunting organization that fights these.....the more members the more influence they have!
I just joined the sportsman’s alliance, as far as a state organization other than crpa and ca deer association what else do you suggest?

Finally a win for us here in CA. I am still in shock....BUT the Humane Society will surely push this again post Covid, so we have to be ready to fight.

Indeed! This may be dead for this year due to the compressed legislative schedule this year, but...
