Bears Ears Visitors Center

And to think the NM designation was to protect the antiquities there?

... and that the problem with the Monument was it would attract visitors.

Let's build a dang Visitors Center and see what happens to the wildlife and habitat.

It’s right out of the playbook for restricting access.

1. Offer amenities like visitor centers and new roads to parking lots.

2. Block off historic access like unauthorized 2 tracks.

3. Counter public concerns with promises of local economic development (concession, jobs, etc.).

Move along, nothing to see here.

There were plenty on here applauding Obama for this the last time around as we told them NM's lead to NP's. Bears Ears National Park will be he who shall remain nameless's crowning jewel.

The guy that's sponsoring this went to jail for his antics, a large part of which was opposing BENM. Now he wants a Visitor Center.

The guy promoting switching GSENM to a National Park is a sitting member of Congress from Utah.

These are both R's, not D's. Wise up and quit trying to blame Obama for everything. You're directing your false indignation at the wrong people.

This is YOUR party doing this!

Who started us down this rabbit hole and who was cheering it on?

While technically true of what is happening today, that severely overly simplifies the situation and WHY these things are happening today. The visitor’s center is being proposed because of all the increased traffic. Increase traffic that would not have happened, but for prior actions of one person designating a monument.

In reality, that is a very misleading take on the situation.

It's not an oversimplification. It will not only appease current traffic, it will increase it further.

"If you build it, they will come."

That area already has Natural Bridges National Monument, Valley of the Gods, Hovenweep National Monument, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and other attractions.

Without a Visitors Center, there isn't the draw into the Bears Ears nor the publicity. That's the actual purpose of building the Visitors Center, to increase traffic!

Unless the Monument former-opponents are now TRYING to increase traffic, there's no reason to spend taxpayer dollars to create a brand new facility to induce visitation.

The hypocrisy of people opposing increased traffic now supporting it because of the political affiliation of the proponent is all too transparent.

I think the majority of the increase of visitors is mainly because of the pandemic. Las Vegas is shut down. To help the Tribes, let them put up Bear's Ears Casino and an information bulletin board. That's what California would do.

To be clear, I don’t affiliate with Lyman on anything. And the hypocrisy you cite is no more blatant or humorous than the hypocrisy of those criticizing for the exact same reason-the lack of affiliation with the proponent.

I don’t like any of this. Bears Ears was just fine the way it was in 2013. It should have remained that way. A classic case of “careful what you wish for.”

I'm aware you're not pro-Lyman in this. I didn't intend to imply as such.

However, I'm not quite sure to whom you're referring with the "careful what you wish for" statement. It seems to me the pro-Monument folks would cheer for a Visitors Center; so they'd be getting what they want. It's only a step closer to more traffic, more commercialization and industrialization, and more restriction.

What I can't figure out is why Lyman is suddenly pushing it, and why his constituents just trot around after him and are suddenly showing no sign of resistance to the commercial development of the Bears Ears with the sole purpose being to attract out-of-state/country visitors to their backyard.

Unless they were against all of this before they were for it.

It's like the people who "warned" that Monuments beget Parks, and then when the guy they voted for wants a Park... they're suddenly okay with it. Where's the individual thought integrity?

I don’t know. You keep replying to me about this. You should probably reply to someone else that is okay with it now to get that answer.

Economic development and the chamber of commerce are great at ruining great hunting and fishing spots. I often wonder why so many sportsman support them. I guess it’s fine until it’s your little piece of heaven that gets the spotlight.

Careful, careful about going too far with the political stuff. A couple posts were leading to a fight, and I don't want that here. Find a way to discuss the topic without the political attacks. I know some don't like that, or don't think it's possible, or whatever. If you can't find a way, then move on to a new subject, like how to hunt a jackrabbit with your knife.

What is the hangup you have over discussing politics? Is this place becoming another facebook?

Don’t want the battles here. There’s enough of that elsewhere. If they don’t want you having political fights and attacks on FB, then yes, it’s another FB. I don’t want the attacks, which lead to fights, here. This is a hunting site.
It’s non-negotiable.

In the future, instead of asking your questions of me in a thread, just private message me.

The problem is simple, we have too many people. we either protect places like this or we lose them. this isn't the wild west anymore so stop pretending it is or ever will be again. everything is going to be developed and exploited in one form or another by the masses headed this way.

The hippies over protect it or the Bubba's dig it up looking for treasures then turn it into an ATV track. take your pick. I say protect it, if they take it too far it beats the alternative.

What is "taking it too far?" You take it too far and Utah loses one of the best elk hunting units in the world. I'm not okay with that, personally. But I like people being able to hunt elk.

It would be better to rape and pillage it ? or let Bubba have his way and sell it to the highest bidder and let him decide what to do with it ?

This isn't a simple matter of just don't protect it and it will be fine that's intellectually dishonest . once again, I'd rather lose the hunting than lose it altogether so I say i trust the hippies more than Bubba.

And what are you basing your fears the hunting will be eliminated on anyway ? sure, that may come up at some point but it's not an issue now. fight that fight when and if it comes but don't lose sight of the big picture over unsubstantiated fear. everything is lost if we live life that way.

You set up a completely false dichotomy and then go out and call me intellectually dishonest? Wow, ain’t that some crap?

You talked about it being “over protected,” not me. I was replying to you. Try to keep up with your own statements before you try and come at someone else.

Hey Niller?

You're Dealing somebody even more Hard Headed than Me!:D

It’s a good thing, it’s next to impossible to get a tag there and Blanding needs a face lift. The town could use another steam of revenue through the Patio or A&W. Place has had a hard time surviving since Ol’ DoC redd took the easy way out.
