The Book Cliffs have been quiet to me for only a short time.

On that memorable April Day things where about to change.

They wanted one more shot at me.

Early in the year we set out on scouting trips to previous battle fields. We involved the Men, Women and Children for this experience. To prepare them for what was to come.

A tell tale sign of a Great Bowhunter is their hat.
When the hunter is a beginner both sides of the brim are flat. When they are truly great both sides will bend up like Robinhood
As you can see only one side is up. Maybe this is the year they will both be up.
Or he just fell asleep on that side, who knows

My Son Brandon and I found a little sanctuary during the summer. It was a place called Timpanogos Archers. It was a place to hone our skills and become precise with our Archery Equipment.

I myself was able to get lucky during practice also

This gets expensive. Some big buck will have to pay for this

We were soon ready to make our first trip to the Book Cliffs.

Things were not going to be as smooth as they have been.

I wasn't going to make my next trip to the Book Cliffs until the 24th of July but SilentStalker went out on the 4th of July and found a few Candidates.

There are more Commanders than we thought.

.

On the 24th I have a feeling I will find the one I want

Our first trip to the Wasteland found Scott, Myself and my daughter Jaedee all side by side in a supped up mega machine called a Polaris Ranger. It is the only way to fly.

The morning started well.

Usually where there are girls, there are also boys

We rode from one end.

I built this Rock Blind when I was fifteen years old. The remains were still there after 22 years.

The main focus was to set up Spy Cameras to find out the Kings plans.

On June 19th the Kings of the Book Cliffs were just beginning to perfect there headgear, but we had an idea of what they may become in the next months.

Things could not have went better.

Until the ride home.

We left the Book Cliffs at 10:00 p.m. that night and didn't make it to Home Base until 8:00 the next morning. Usually a 4 1/2 hour trip. They old but seasoned White Chevy brought us home one more time. Not the easy way but we made it

They threw thier first punch. They knew we were there.

A new Intake Manifold Gasket, Catalytic Converter, and Fuel Pump and a hefty bill of 1,300 Dollars.

I was stunned to say the least. But it wasn't over yet.

Jaedee and I made our way quietly into the Heart of the Book Cliffs on that 24th day of July. All of the Deer were fully vested into their summer routines.

One of my best buds.
9697picture_451.jpg

Upon checking the cameras. We had a few visitors.

This Guy had our attention. This is Megatron. One of the Decepticons.
2055picture_236.jpg

The Front Line.
2977picture_282.jpg

They just kept coming.
7156picture_311.jpg

Definitely a Spy.
8185picture_330.jpg

BUSTED!!!
9382picture_032.jpg

The Gig was up. These guys meant business. They stomped my camera into the mud and destroyed it just to make a point.

Jaedee and I quickly got away.

But right around the corner was Block Head.
2834picture_392.jpg

He was an Old Warrior with Heavy Horns.

We continued to check hideout after hideout and then it happen. Megatron showed himself.
9973extra_pictures_269.jpg

He was taunting us. Showing us he wasn't afraid to walk in front of us.
7937extra_pictures_270.jpg

Another Buck that was not afraid.
7304picture_399.jpg

After the Weekend we had a good Idea of what we were up against and who we should target first. Megatron was the one.

All though we were done for the weekend, the Book Cliffs were not finished with us yet.

We loaded the Kodiak on the trailer and headed for town.

Not long after we started something on the trailer popped.
1412extra_pictures_211.jpg

The frame had given out and was rubbing on the tire. Rubbed clean through
6295extra_pictures_210.jpg

Thank goodness for the old palette on the side of the road. We were able to make a temporary support.
6769extra_pictures_250.jpg

Buy shear luck we had a drill and some wood screws that helped secure it.

We could have lost a good Wheeler that day because when we arrived at Home Base and unloaded it the trailer completely fell apart.

Another punch thrown buy the Book Cliffs. They would not be taken easily.

There is an old saying that bad things happen in 3's. We had one more trip planned on the 14th day of August. Lets hope that saying isn't true.

August 14th arrived and we were off again. Finalizing our plans and grabbing a bite to eat at Rocky's Place.

This trip found SilentStalker, his Father and his Son along with Myself, my Son and My Brother-In-law.

We were fully loaded on the Wheelers
58612010_book_cliffs_bowhunt_004.jpg

and setting up stands.
97432010_book_cliffs_bowhunt_007.jpg

We checked our cameras.

The Warriors were starting to team up.
4872mdgc0053.jpg

A couple new faces.
8099mdgc0128.jpg

And another.
1189mdgc0132.jpg

Another Spy. Watch out for these guys, they have eagle eyes.

Found another candidate.

After getting everything in order we decided to let our boys fine tune some of there skills.

Well Done Boys.

Brandon also manage to catch a little spy. but he would not talk
99962010_book_cliffs_bowhunt_010.jpg

Well the Book Cliffs weren't about to let us have a peaceful trip this late in the summer. They were going to throw one of the hardest punches at us.

One that still scares me when I think about it.

They boys just finished there lesson on stalking when SilentStalker and I with our boys riding on back of our wheelers were racing to another vantage point.

Going about 30 MPH I looked up and saw a pile of Wild Horse Crap in the road. You know the kind where they all crap in the same place and make a big large pile.

With a slight turn and a slight press of the rear brake I was sliding sideways down the road.

Brandon and I held our balance until about 5 MPH and then the Wheeler flipped.
6025wheeler_01.jpg

6309wheeler_02.jpg

I didn't know the horses were in this game too.

I could think a novel in that short time. I just knew this was going to be serious but by the shear help of our Heavenly Father we came away unscathed.

We now would head home and return in 5 days for the duration of the hunt.

Upon return the SDWM Battalion was ready.
3701dsc01665.jpg

We practiced on last time.
304dsc01661.jpg

And then settled in for a long fall night.
31572010_book_cliffs_bowhunt_061.jpg

Opening Morning brought clear sky's and warmth.
54652010_book_cliffs_bowhunt_043.jpg

There were a couple of Spy's checking out my transportation.
I'm lucky they didn't steal anything.
3914dsc01637.jpg

Throughout our Quest to find Megatron we sifted through some of the lesser generals.

23 yards, but safe for another day
7763dsc01638.jpg

This guy was pushing his luck.
2376dsc01654.jpg

This was one of the best stalks we made during the hunt. We literally crawled right above him and dropped a rock on him before he knew we were there.
6877dsc01653.jpg

I will forever regret this chance. I was 40 yards from this buck with my son over my shoulder saying shoot. But I didn't
195dsc01672.jpg

BINGO one of the Decepticons. Megatron has to be close.
163dsc01648.jpg

A Red Sunrise, That means that Blood was shed last night.
6197extra_pictures_114.jpg

Megatron never showed himself. He's played this game before

But just before dark on the 8th day.
Block Head came to a Face Off.

Steady, Aim, No Regrets.
69242010_book_cliffs_bowhunt_102.jpg

A perfect arrow at 30 yards pierced the heart of the warrior.

By the time we went to find him it was dark, Blood was hard to see so we backed off until the morning.

After a sleepless night and a 150 yard blood trail.
There was Block Head in his final resting place.

As the Battle neared the end,
the Book Cliffs gave us one last reminder that they were again
"HERE TO STAY" and would not go away lightly
5835extra_pictures_385.jpg

And then the sun set on the 2010 Book Cliff Adventure
5701101_1404.jpg

Thank You to all that was a part of this with me.

Stay tuned for further updates of this Falls Adventures.

After Silent Stalker and I left the Book Cliffs my Brother-In-Law was left out there by himself. He had never hunted until he married my sister and was fortunate to kill his first buck this year

Congratulation Brian and thanks for all your help on my hunt

One thing that was kind of a downer for me was my Dad wasn't able to make it out for my hunt. He really wanted to be there but he couldn't because he had drawn an Archery Elk Tag in Wyoming.

Here is the Bull he took with his Bow

This is the largest elk taken in my family and I was very happy it went to my Dad.

Karma came around in a good way.

The bull scores right at 370

Well we still have my two Daughters Central Rifle Deer Tags.
If they get one it will be their first.

Wish us luck

My daughters and I hunted very hard on the General rifle hunt. The warriors were elusive. We saw a total of a 128 deer in 4 days with only 3 of them being bucks (A really big 4 point, A nice 3 point and a yearling 2 point).

We were about 5 seconds from closing the deal on the 3 point. Never had a good shot so he got away.

Thats why we call it hunting. My daughters had a great time and are looking forward to next season.

I did go with Scott on his cow hunt and found some success.
6123scotts_cow_elk.jpg

After we loaded this fine piece of meat in the truck. I stood back on the dirt bank to reflect on the days events.

It was time to go. I jumped of the bank and "POP" went the right ankle.
Another way of letting us know that we won't get the best of the hunting world
1894ankle.jpg

The end of the 2010 hunt adventure has come to a close.
Rehab is now the future.

This season was a great season. We had some ups and we had some downs. All in all I will always remember it and thats what is important for me and my family.

Thank you to my Family
Thank you to my Hunting Brothers, you know who you are

May the hunting traditions continue in the future and may there be many more battles and victories to come.
