My bud drew a non-ressy bow bull tag on the Dutton.

Any intel for starters would be real nice.

There is a reason you can draw that tag with single digits bonus points. Plenty if elk, and lots of big mature bulls, but very steep nasty terrain in most of the unit. I've thought about trying it myself before I get too old.

Tell him to make a scouting trip or two and hit Bryce canyon while he's there!

Happy to see your post. I want to do this hunt right, likely my last utah elk hunt. I am thinking of hunting the last 2 weeks of the season. I am thinking a hard backpack hunt is history for me but if i have to i have a son that will accompany me. Do I want a drop camp, rent horses (not real high on my list) or something else? Curious as to what the water hole/guzzler situation is. I am expecting a rougher steeper terrain, not sure of the elevation, not sure how far back in I should be or how much I need to move during the hunt.
Those are my starting research type questions.
I hope you had a great hunt, can't wait to hear your experience.
Todd

Team Muscle Milk....

When I get home from deployment I'm going to have to find the pictures of the bull hanging in the tree. Great group of guys getting it done in the ninth inning!

I thought something looked weird in that picture.. Was the elk's left beam broken off or a few of its tines? The right beam looks normal but its left sure looks photoshopped in there or something. Big bull though.

Can be super tough during archery season....especially if it's hot and full moon! Bring lots of water...it can be scorching hot. Elk may be super tough finding so be prepared to cover lots of country without seeing or hearing a whole lot!

LAST EDITED ON May-17-18 AT 08:23PM (MST)[p]That hunt can be so dang hot! 95 plus degrees everyday wears a guy out. Probably one of the hardest archery elk hunts around. Look for water. Watch out for snakes!!!

Half the bulls left antler are mirrored tines pasted on from the right antler, along with an extra point. Super funny

So far I am hunting a steep rock in 95 degree heat. That seems to bring water holes into the equation. Hoping this unit has a network of guzzlers. All encouragement is welcome.

After Stinky Gets done Shooting them!

It Takes a little Work to put the Puzzle back together!:D

The Bull Does/Did have an Extra G-2 on the Left Side at one time!:D

On the Last Shot as the Bull Was Running up the Hill,The Bull Wheelied Over & Hung Himself in a Tree!

First Time I'd ever seen an Animal Hang Himself!

Yes boy's, this bull had two tines broken off so stinky did a minor electronic repair job.
None the less, it was a heck of a good bull.

I had this tag in 2016. It was a TOUGH hunt. I focused on the north side of the unit by Table Mountain. I also got the north west portion and hunted the crap out of Bull Rush. Send me a text if you want to know more. 8017212027

I was hoping bowhunt would chime in with his cranker archery bull.
Nice job guys and lots of good help for PleaseDear.
You are a good friend Robb. Best of luck to the tag holder!

I helped my dad on the bow hunt in 2016. Tag soup for my 68 year old father but I learned a lot about the unit and had it on my elk app, I'm 35 though.

One challenging hunt- get in shape! Had the tag way back in 2005 and had a blast connecting on a bull on the seventh day of hunting on Labor Day Weekend Sunday was a nice 6 X 6; 356 7/8 bull.

Robb,
Thanks for posting this thread. Rhe results are that my son Zac, my assistant, and i started hunting Sun, Sept 2. The Labor day crowd hunting cows, spikes and scouting bulls for friends was a zoo but was OK starting Tues. Weather was great although it could have been cooler.
Saw groups as large as 9 guys scouting for a guh with a tag, seemed similar to a sheep hunt.
I got the impression th he unit was so scattered in terms of elk pockets that plane scouting was the way to go which i did not do.
Never saw a great bull but had some encounters and had a medium bull close but too thick, passed on a couple of smaller bulls, until 9/10 when Zac called in a good sounding bull that was too hard to pass.
I moved in to a setup that i though the bull might have moved on but he bugled from 80 yards. I directed Zac to his left to line me up with the bull.
The bull then started to move towards me and as he went behind a brush screen at 25 yards i drew my hoyt only to have Zac bugle which then locked up.
At about 2 min i decided to let down after 3 creeps. 20 seconds later the bull continued and the screen gave me a chance to redraw.
The bull gave me a frontal angle shoort at <20 yards which turned him 180 degrees and we heard him crash after 70 yards.
A great hunt, great father son experience. For a steep high altitude area we had an easy hunt. That for the veterans that suggested basins and coordinates of wallows.
Pic is Zac carrying out 90+lbs of horn, cape and head although no pics are posting so far, sorry. Bull had huge feet, big body, smaller fronts and thirds.

Fantastic!!! Brings back so many memories of my hunt. That team work is so critical. On mine had the caller move back 80 yards that brought the bull in 100 yards to 19 yards. Never forget him bugling at 20 yards and then seeing my arrow in him. Way to go. The thirds typically are smaller on most of the Dutton bulls I've seen and ones I know that have been taken you just never know when that monster will show up.
