Building an Elk.

Well, first off, I am not a taxidermist. I don't claim to know what there is to know about doing taxidermy. I am a wildlife artist and this is, what I consider, a life size sculpture. What I want to do here is a kind of 'work in progress' of mounting my 2010 bull. I will post major steps of the project from somewhere around start, hopefully to finish.

So lets get started shall we??!!!!

Elk hunting 2010 started off pretty slow, archery season I saw one (1) spike bull on the run, and was not carrying my bow, opening day #1, I went to a new exploratory place and was pleasantly surprised with the elk that I saw, but still did not kill. So, opening day #2, weekend with the family, the weather was very warm and there were no elk anywhere in the area that we chose to hunt. So throughout that weekend, we ended up seeing a total of 2 'huntable' elk, but they were a long ways away, and there were several guys that we could see on the hillside below these elk. So the end of the season is getting close, and the last trip was a quick 2 1/2 day trip in the middle of the week. The mountains got a lot of snow the weekend and the day before, so I felt pretty good about going out. The trip turned out to be a success, camping in 0* weather and trudging through 10-12" of snow, seeing over 25 elk, and taking a 265" 5x6 bull, not huge but I was very happy to take it, and it turned out to be a great tip, and made the whole year.

4 years ago was the last elk that I shot, and wanted but could not afford, nor did I have the time to get it mounted, so I did an antler mount on that bull and it hangs beautifully in my house, so I thought I would get this one mounted. Well, I caped the elk and put it in the freezer until all of hunting season and the holidays were over. In the meantime, I did a European mount on it and, it too, hangs beautifully in my house and don't want to use it for the mount.

Now, I still have the cape so I just needed to get a set of antlers, no problem. I am a shed hunter and I found a nice deadhead a few years ago that I would be happy with, so I started the taxidermy process.

I got all my parts ordered and figured out, I ordered an offset shoulder form from Mckenzie, and began working.

I pulled the cape out of the freezer, thawed it, fleshed it, split lips and eyes and turned the ears, and salted and dryed for my next days off from work for the next step. Sorry, I didn't get any pictures of the fleshing.

I got all of my parts in the mail and set to my 'sculpture'. The form came in two pieces so I had to put them together, I used bondo to hold the pieces together.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-05-11 AT 09:03PM (MST)[p]I did a little work on the antler set that I chose. They were bleached out but in very good shape, so I needed to stain them. I also want to make a detachable antler for meneuverablity, haven't decided yet whether I want to do both antlers, but I have a few days to decide.

I also started the pickle/tanning,

So I sit here for a while until the tanning is complete.

I also finished the detachable antler, and secured the skull cap to the form.

I think I might try and get the mounting started tomorrow, we'll see what happens.

Next step, tanning

Then I stuck them in the freezer until I was ready to put the cape on.

and this is where it will sit for a day or so until I get back to it between work time off.

Thanks for all the comments, this has been fun to do this. Well it is pretty much done, I will let it dry slowly, watching it everyday to make sure it doesn't shrink or drum anywhere that I don't want, and then when it is completely dry I will do the finish paint and trim. Thanks for watching.

No this is a first for me, never done taxidermy before besides antler and skull mounts. I did mention that I am a wildlife artist so I know the anatomy of an animal, this was just of test of chemistry and assembly. Otherwise I just considered this one of my sculptures, and I gotta say, I am very pleased with the results so far.

Thanks.

Sweet post and the mount is looking great!!! Gives them that think that they may want to try this some pointers and hope. Keep us posted.

Once a person sees how much work goes into a good mount, it makes you realize they don't charge near as much as you thought they did.

Thanks guys, great feedback. I rough estimated about 100 hrs in this thing from fleshing to where it sits right now (still unfinished) and I figure minus the cost of supplies, I would have only made about $6 per hour. Now I know that a good, professional taxidermist knows a lot of quick 'shortcuts' and can save some time and money on a mount like this through experience, but, I've got a greater respect for anyone that does this for a living now.

DRT, I am not calling you a liar, but you have obviously been exposed to the mounting process somehow or another. Just because you are an artist, doesn't mean you can just wing the mechanics of the mounting process. There are some things wrong with your mount, but overall, it is better than a lot of mounts I see experienced people producing.

4000---A LIAR AS FAR AS WHAT!!?? I never said that I didn't know how it was done, welcome to the wide world of the internet!! Have you ever been in a taxidermy shop? huh, I guess you may have been exposed to the taxidermy process, what do we need taxidermists for anymore? anyone can do it, its easy! Is taxidermy not a form of art? I don't think a taxidermist can do some of the artwork that I do, with the same results that I get. I don't think I could get the same results in taxidermy.

My whole intention for this thread was to give people an idea of what goes into a piece of 'artwork'. I never implied anywhere that I am or will be a taxidermist, I'm not taking orders. Have you ever changed a light bulb? are you an electrician? have you ever fixed a leaky pipe? are you a plumber? have you ever put air in your tire of your truck? are you a mechanic?

I don't really understand what you are getting at, I wanted to show this for the pure enjoyment of getting responses like yours. I know there are things wrong with the mount, I am not a taxidermist. From my experiences, every taxidermy shop that I've ever been into has things wrong with his/her mounts, nobody is perfect. I thought it would be nice to try doing this myself instead of handing over $800-1500 for a $hitty mount that I can obviously do all by myself!

Also, you see things wrong with it, What!? Have you ever gotten a mount from the taxidermist that had things wrong with it? did you tell him/her? whynot? I don't like walking into peoples homes, with there prized mounts on the wall, that they paid top dollar for, that look like absolute crap! Tell your taxidermist that he messed up, whats wrong with that? make him fix it!! I would be welcomed to your suggestions for improvement, please tell me what YOU think is wrong with my mount.

Thank you for your response

>No this is a first for
>me, never done taxidermy before

You missed my point, I said it looks too good for not having any taxidermy experience. You obviously have been around it, and/or helped a taxidermist mount something prior.
