Wife called today and said when she arrived there was a kid sitting out front of our place, and as she pulled in the drive he took off like a bat out of h311.

She got inside, and all of my firearms were laid out on the living room floor.

He had helped hisself to my daughter's Gym bag, and had loaded all my Xbox Games and my Wii.

I guess he probably had called for a "get-away" car, and was waiting for them to come help him lift my guns.

He got away with 1, my daughter's first combo gun ( as it was broken down and quick to fit in the duffel bag ), but none of the others.

I thought it would never happen to me, but it did, and I was @#$^ lucky that my wife got home when she did, or I would have lost 12 firearms, including some my Grandfather had left me.

Keep a list of your firearms and their serial numbers, and not just on your home computer, because those fools will probably steal that as well.

Stick the list in your safety deposit box, give a copy to a trusted friend.

I have moved my firearms to my parents for the night, if those sorry sacks come back tomorrow they won't find anything but me here as I wait for my dad to deliver the new gun-safe.

Be safe out there, and watch your back. @$$-holes are everywhere.

Thanks for letting me vent,
And thank GOD, that my family wasn't home when they broke in and no one got hurt.

This stuff is happening more and more. Glad your wife did not walk in on them. Hope they find the scum bags and hang em high.

Great to here your family is OK and your loss was minimal.
We got broken into many years ago_On the bed was a empty box of shotgun shells,Where they had actually loaded up one of the rifles

You are very fortunate. My guns are worth more to me than any other material objects. I dont know what I;d do if the guns I received from my grandfather were stolen. For this reason I bought a gun safe last year when I moved into my house. My college roommate hasnt been as fortunate. First, his parents home was broken into and every gun in the house stolen. A couple years later and 200 miles away, the college house I used to live in was broken into and he lost all his guns again. I now store most of his guns until he gets a place of his own with a safe.

Everyone: please buy a safe...you'll never regret it

Buy a safe. Period. For the cost of one gun with decent optics you can protect your gun collection with a quality safe. Best safe for the money in NM is the Browning Yukon Gold edition that is sold at Sportsmans. Old guns that are handed down are priceless and newer guns that are expensive are just that. Bottom line, keep your guns and your serial numbers off the streets. How would you feel if you found out that one of your firearms was used in a crime, much less used to hurt someone. Be responsible and keep them locked up.

Two friends of mine have had their homes broken into during the past two months in Albuquerque. Both own multiple firearms including some fully automatics. Because of their safes the only guns they lost were their night-stand handguns. It could have have been much worse with a couple of automatics in the hands of a couple of idiots and with those guns on the streets.

Be a responsible gun owner.

Unfortunately this crap happens all the time. I have a friend who had a similar thing happen to him. The bad thing is he thought it was a one time thing but about a week later his house was broken into and they took his guns. Be careful and keep a eye out for you and your neighbors.

NMELKTROUT,

That is what I just went and bought was the 12/24 Yukon Gold.

As you said for the price of one of my nicer guns, ALL of them are protected. Now to drill 4" in to my slab, and anchor that MoFo down.

That is my fear as well is that they will hit us again, now knowing what I have on hand.

I also am having a home security system installed with the loudest internal and external sirens available, tomorrow at 8AM.

Keep safe out there.

Actually, I have a safe (wood) which is worthless. I was planning on buying a safe but have been taking my time. Yeah,
I know "stupid".

Fortunately, this thread has convinced me to buy ASAP!!

Woodruff, good call man. You won't regret it.

Yotebuster, thank goodness your wife was not injured or put in danger beyond what she was and that this turned into a healthy reminder for many of us to lock our guns up. Good call on the Yukon Gold, I love the fact that my guns are in a 580lb safe that is bolted to a slab of concrete, especially the few that I inherited.

While you are buying a safe, go ahead and spend the little bit extra on a good fire rated one.

A great benefit to having a gun safe is having a place to store all your important papers (titles, deeds, birth certificates, wills, etc.) as much from a possible fire standpoint as from a theft standpoint.

Amen to that npaden. That's the other good thing about the Yukon Gold safes, great fire rating with Browning self sealing doors. And, Browning will send a tech to open the safe in the event of a fire. Everything valuable that I own (including passport & other personal info) is in lockdown with my guns and I stick laptops, etc in there when I go anywhere out of town. My hippie neighbors even bring their valuables over to put in my safe when they travel. Guess I should start charging a fee...

LAST EDITED ON Mar-05-10 AT 05:17AM (MST)[p]Had my computer/brief case bag and travel bag stolen from truck last month,I had taken my gun out with me.I will be getting safe when possible. But if I catch the A-holes...SSS

Hank, somewhere I saw a advertisement recently that they called Lojak for laptops.
Be kinda nice to follow the signal to the guy that stole your laptop before they sell it.

Het Elktrout sorry to hear about your misfortune. Our neighborhood too has had a rash of burglaries forcing me to buy a safe. I also reactivated our alarm but went with Armed response team, do not know if i can say their name on here but the reason i went w/ them is they are retired or current Police officers that respond to your alarm and that is all they do is respond to their client base. If you are out of albuquerque look them up about $40 month but worth the piece of mind, they typically respond within five minutes of receiving the alarm. Just my 2 cents.

Not limited to NM. Had guns, optics, computers, and basically everything of value stolen a year and a half ago here in Tucson. Even with serial numbers nothing has turned up. Some of the guns were gifts from long ago. Just as bad tho was the loss of the laptop. Had a lot of pix that I had never put on disk or printed. I had just moved into the house and didnt have my safe in yet. One of the worst feelings ever to walk into your house and see it basically empty. Luckily my wife was gone when they broke in.

The pics on the computer was biggest loss, that and the camera that took them, four years of hunts and the outdoors ...

For you guys with tons of pictures ( and the fear of losing them), look at smugmug.com. Unlimited storage of even 10 MegaPixel photos for like $40 a year!

Then you can share, buy, print to your hearts content, and they are safe offsite as well. They have great programs to assist in your uploading too.

At one point I had near a Terabyte of data on their servers, and then I went to private hosting for my websites, and professional backup service. I had 0 problems, just was overkill once I had my own sites.

Even if you have CD backups, or an external harddrive with your photos, those can be damaged in a fire, or stolen as well. Offsite backups WORK.

If you are a Costco Member they have a really good deal on a fire proof safe there right now. I am fixing to order me one.
