Camping in the Bernalillo to Cuba corridor?

hoping to head to Colorado over Memorial Day weekend but will have to stop for 1 night and am not ready to trust a hotel. Thinking of pitching a tent somewhere. But I can find any campgrounds open. Suggestions?

Realize we can camp on public land, but will be getting there pretty late and don’t want to have to hunt for a place in an area I am unfamiliar with. Hoping some actual campgrounds open up. Otherwise may have to chance a hotel.

All established campgrounds are currently closed. I would guess they will be closed by Memorial Day as well. (Honestly, Memorial Day Weekend in an established campground is my definition of hell) But if you have a vehicle with some ground clearance, we can probably come up with some spots you could find in the dark.

I wouldn't chance a hotel in Cuba. If you're going through Cuba, you must be heading through Bloomfield and Aztec as well? Those towns are only another hour away from Cuba...

We may stop in the Bernalillo area if we stay at a hotel. Won’t make it as far as Bloomfield. Wife can’t travel that many hours ?. Cuba would be pushing it.

Most of 550 between Bernalillo and Cuba is Pueblo land. There is a small section of BLM immediately before and immediately after San Ysidro, but I can't think of any good roads in either of those areas that would get you a little ways off of 550 where you'd be comfortable pitching a tent. But I never looked that closely, so there may be one there.

There is the Cabezon graded dirt road about 2.5 miles south of San Ysidro, where you would need to drive about 4 miles to get to BLM, and then there are some areas in there that aren't developed campgrounds, but it would probably be fine and secluded enough to pitch a tent.

After San Ysidro, you'd have to drive about 26 miles to get to the next BLM. I've probably driven through that area a couple hundred times, but I've never paid close enough attention to be able to say whether there is any good places to pitch a tent that would be convenient to 550. I do know there are stretches between there and Cuba where Continental Divide Trail thru hikers often camp. I just don't know exactly where.

Thanks. I have driven thru there many times too, but have never stayed in the area. We only stopped in Cuba for gas or food. We do like the Mexican restaurant there.:)

You are 4 hrs to GH when you get to Abq. But that last 4 hours can be a pull. There is also that little casino on the Jicarilla, but that may be closed.

And I wouldn't camp anywhere on the side of the road from Cuba to Dgo/cez. Or for that matter anywhere near the road from Abq to Dgo.

And to answer a previous question, it looks like there is zero concern about non-residents being in CO. Yellow plates galore.
