I had a taxidermist that used a sort of coating to darken my muley's antlers to make them a little darker. Do any of you know a product that would do this?

I remember a young kid up in MT back in the 80's who found a 6x6 Bull head and carried it back out to PU. Later that evening when we got back to house, the kid had already got the rack on a board and stained the rack and put some kind of materal around the base.
When his dad asked him what he used he said SHOE POLISH PASTE, a dark Brown. Let it set for awhile and then wiped it off and the tips looked like Ivory.
