Cleaning canvas wall tents

Is there a good way to clean canvas that will not remove mildew,fire, and water resistence?

I asked the same question to the company who made the one I have. They said to set it up, use a brush and lightly try and brush off the dirt. It if still shows, use woolite and lightly try to wash it out. (I'd use a small brush to try it). Make sure it is dry when re-packed.
