CO unit 80/81 elk

I've never hunted elk in these units before just 71/711. Not looking for any honey holes by any means just an idea on where to start. I'm not against hiking miles to find them just ready to get back outdoors and have fun. What's the pressure like the terrain etc... Any help would be appreciated.

Elk are up high early, around timberline(ish)... Lots (I think) of hunting pressure, unless you get 1+ miles from a road/trail.

These units have gotten hit hard with poaching in the last 6-10 years. We hunted unit 81 for about 9 years and finally gave up. Very few elk and way to many hunters. On the average a camp of about 10 guys would kill 1-2 bulls. People might get lucky but,in my opinion the units have went down hill big time in the last ten years.

is the deer hunting about the same?

I have a tag, but haven't heard much at all about the unit.
