I have been spending a lot of time over the last 4 years teaching my daughters and wife to hunt. We have shared a lot of great times together in the mountains, but it is time for dad to get in a hunt. I am going to apply for unit 44 3rd season mule deer. I know the last couple of seasons have been hot and dry, but one of these years some lucky hunter is going to hit the holy grail of snow and rut. This may be the year. I am turning 60 this year in good shape and still get around in the mountains well. I am reaching out to fellow hunters with any info on the unit or advice that could help out. I live in Idaho and would be happy to exchange info. I spend a lot of time watching wildlife.

That's a great choice.
I'm sure you know you will need at least 21 points to be in the drawing and probably more to guarantee a tag

I have been applying for a 44 third Season tag for 15 years now. I finally realized I will never draw that tag in my lifetime so I am looking other units. I wish I knew a hunt to get into that has those bucks that come into 44 in the later season. Are they in the holy cross wilderness?

Sending you a PM

I've been out wolf hunting today. The search for big bucks and to stay ahead of the curve is getting harder and harder. With point creep catching up in most states, it's hard to find areas that hold a good supply of mature bucks. As I said in my first post, I have been teaching my kids how to hunt and my wife decided she wanted to start hunting also. We?ve had a great time out in the woods on foot with backpacks and seeing a lot of quality animals. I spend the whole year scouting for what I'm going to hunt. Our family enjoys shooting, scouting and hunting. I will post a couple of photos of the girls and their hunts from the past few years.

Some great looking animals there! Congrats to the girls ! You must be keeping your taxidermist happy. LOL!

Every hunting season you miss is one you can not make up

Thanks guys- it's been a lot of fun hunting as a family . I was out hunting today and was thinking about colo deer. It's been 23 long years since I have hunted there because of waiting on points to secure one of the top hunts. That's along time to wait, to long. I have been very blessed at drawing tags over the last 30 years, I will not complain. I feel bad for the young hunters trying to secure good tags it comes at a high cost today. I am just a working man trying to raise a good family in a crazy world. Here is a picture of the last buck I killed in colo. 23 years ago.

It seems that you have been very successful both hunting and raising your family in this crazy world.
You sure know how to get it done on big muley bucks.
I love the mass on that Colorado buck. You don't see much of that on the bucks nowadays.
Thanks for posting the pictures. Your daughters have done well.
Congratulations and good luck on drawing your next Colorado tag.

Thanks buckhorn- I love big massive muleys, and they are hard to find nowadays. When I draw Colorado this year I will be looking for a 1960 model. Heavy, long main beams, deep forks, maybe a forked cheater and a club dropper. I will find a big old buck in 44 this year.
