Just over a week ago this past friday, we talked with this young hunter and his buddy and friends dad at the local Motel in Norwood, Colorado. They had the room next to us and had drove out from West Virginia and have been doing this for the past 5 years. They drive straight thru, a 28 hour drive from what they told us.
They were all excided again like in the past hunts for the opening morning to go after ELK and that is all they hunt....guess they found a "honey hole" as "Gleny" as he was called, said he was going to get a bigger Elk than the one he got a year or so ago there.
We talked about 1/2 hour till it got chilly outside so wished each other good luck for the next day.
My friend and I were up and gone by 4:30am to drive out to the area where PC_the_Great told us to go to give it a try out in the "basin". The guys next to us had not left yet.
Make a long story short, we were talking with a "Sheriff" at the basin store about 10:30 when we got coffee and head to another area. Asked him if he was helping F&G and he said NO, had to go assist others on a young man who died from a heart attack at Lone Cone.
Well when we got back to Motel at about 5pm the older man was standing at the end of walkway smoking a cig and he told us that Gleny died about 9:30am after he got his Bull Elk, his biggest one ever......man what a shocker that was. They were going to leave the next day or so and go home to WV.
It was the talk of that small town, the folks there did all they could to help the other two cope with the situation and help them in any way.
I was able to locate the local paper just now thru GOOGLE and here is his obit.....sure which they had a website to give regards to his family but it is a small rural area I guess and not up to modern internet applications.

REST IN PEACE GLENY.

Good way to go I guess. Still sucks. Unit 70 or 61? I only ask because I know the area well.

Too bad for his family.

Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-11 AT 00:39AM (MST)[p]His great uncle and aunt were my neighbors when I was growing up, in fact they are my God parents. I went to church with his grandmother Mae, very sweet lady. I didn't know him too well he was about 10 years older than I am. They held the service this Friday, I didnt know anything about it until today when I spoke with my Mom, she told about what happened.

Then in the NEXT thread ask about the size of his elk, what unit he was huntin.

God fogive him for being an Easterner, and bless his family in their loss!

RIP elk hunter!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-11 AT 05:36AM (MST)[p] Sad.....we are all going to die.

Better this way than..."he had just put his last alimony payment and his income tax payment, in the mailbox and he just tipped over dead"

My obit will read; "The 5 women at the bordello expressed surprise, that a 90 year old man actually had that much energy and stamina. The coroner ruled Nickman's death a suicide, when it was discovered that he had taken 9 Viagra, 5 hours prior to his passing. Nickman is preceded in death by EVERYONE!"

"If God did not intend for man to hunt animals, he would have made broccoli more fun to shoot"

Very sad...God bless his family.

Government doesn't fix anything and has spent trillions proving it!!!
Let's face it...After Monday and Tuesday, even the calender says WTF!

I hope the family memorializes the bull. Be a nice tribute.

up anyway."

Sad deal, But When it your time, I would pick the mountains as place and a good hunt as the time. RIP Gleny

Sad deal. I know of several instances of this sort of thing happening. I agree that its not a bad way to go but I always feel bad for the people with that individual. Must be very traumatic. I think it would change your life and might be hard to ever go back.

Brian, my son and his three buddies were there after it all happened. They were within a couple hundred yards of the guy. Heck of a bad deal.

Brian, when did you get home? Did you stay for after the storm? pc

You could probably get a card or something to the family through your own local Engineers' brotherhood....most unions will back other unions, especially in circumstances such as this.

Sad, it sounds like you truly were privileged to spend some of his last moments visiting with fellow hunters bound together by the passion of elk.

Years ago after my uncle died on a hunting trip to AZ. I told my brother that I felt that that wasn't all bad. I then told him that I wanted to die of a massive heart attack after shooting a monster 6 pt bull. He looked at me straight faced and said "make sure you do it close to a road so that we don't have to drag you both out":)
Sorry for the levity. I do feel real badly for the family of a hunter that doesn't come home!

Yes 41 is too young. But, what a way to go (If there is a good one). He looks forward, all year, to this hunt and then he comes out and dies doing what he loves.

I know of a similar story. I once knew a Texan, well advanced in years, possibly in his 60's...Joe. In July, a few years back, I talked to Joe and he told me about how he was coming to Colorado to hunt elk and how he was REALLY looking forward to it. Well, the next June, I heard that Joe never made it off the mountain...no ICU, no Alzheimer's, no being pushed around in a wheelchair, no cane, no whatever negative that comes from science making us live longer than God intends. I believe that it was a heart attack that killed Joe.

I assume that they both died happy, so the story is not as sad as they seem...if you look for a silver lining, tis there.

I know that if the family members would see these posts they would be appreciative, since I know quite a few of them (either I went to school with cousins, or I knew them outside of school or I hunted with some of them). All of them are good folks, the type of people that would lend a hand no matter what.

Hey guys,

My wife just told about finding this forum tonight but Glenny was my dad. He killed 3 bulls in five years hunting Lone Cone mountain in the exact same spot. The day before he left WV he told me to pray for him to get a big elk and I told him, “God is a big god”. I was on my way to Charleston when my mom called me and told me I needed to come home. When I got home I was expecting her to tell me my grandpa had passed away because he had been sick, nothing prepared me for news I got. I know he’s in a better place because the night before he passed away I dreamed of a white glowing cross over his grave. He was the best hunter I ever knew and probably forgot more about hunting than I will ever learn. When I’m in the woods with my bow that is when I feel the closest to him. I like to think he’s probably chasing 200” deer and world class elk in heaven. Thank you for all your kind words stay safe.

Mitchell

Mitchell- Condolences to you and your family. My Father passed away 5 weeks ago and I can relate. I reflect back to the good times that we had and remember him and my mother(she passed away last December) for constantly being caring parents and helping and loving all of those that they knew.

Stay Strong.

Bad deal sorry for your loss, so young.
RIP you never know when your time is up.
Live every day like it is your last..........

I got a text today from Homer about this post and a little later got a phone call from "eelgrass" about this post. Hard to believe it has been 9 years since that sad day for the whole family. I remembered that day and will call my friend that was with me there and the way it all effected the locals there and wanted to help in any way for them. Mitchell, if you see this tell the family that I feel bad it took this long to bring it up, RIP Glenny.

Hey Mitchell, I'm sorry for your loss, I'm really glad for the memories you have of your dad. I really like the carved memorial piece for your dad, that's really touching (it looks like y'all placed it where he passed?). You are right God is a Big God

Mitchell, Sorry for your loss. 41 is very young. I lost my dad at age 61 of a heart attack. Think of the great times you had together.
Speaking of ways to go out: I had a friend have a brain anyerism while playing banjo at the campground of the bluegrass festival. He was playing with friends and some heroes so it was as good a way to go as any.
Condolences to you and your family.

Not the news you like to hear. Yep, 41 is way to young. Died doing what he loved, but too young. Condolences to the family.
