Finally, I'm writing something. So far, 2011 has sucked!!! But, hopefully the worst is over and it's time to get back to hunting, hiking, and all that other fun stuff.

Here's my first entry of the year. My only trip hunting so far this year has been a shed hunting day in Wyoming. It was a good time with a good friend and we found a few.

I have also begun my training for the year.....well, I never really have stopped. Around the first of the year I began the P90x workouts and they have helped a lot. Then, about 4 weeks ago I began my hard hikes and I'm feeling pretty good about where I'll be when it comes time to start backpacking into the highcountry to find deer.

I still have no clue what tags I'll have this year, but I'm hoping for Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado deer tags and a Utah elk tag. Plus, my son may have Wyoming and/or Colorado. Good year ahead I hope!!!!!

Well, I haven't done anymore shed hunting this year and haven't even begun scouting, but I have been working to get my legs in shape. I expect to have atleast a couple tags this year and plan on doing plenty of hiking. So, trying to get after it.

OK, well, I have deer tags for Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. Plus an elk tag. Not sure I will use the elk tag though. Only so much time, as most know.

My plan is to do some serious bowhunting, but I haven't even picked up my bow this year yet. Sad!!! I need to get it done!!

I've been exercising hard all year trying to be ready for the Utah and Wyoming backcountry pack trips. I'm in decent shape and ready to hit the hills in search of a monster muley.

This past weekend I did a great pre-season workout in Colorado at the Tough Mudder event at Beaver Creek. It was a lot of fun and if I can do that, I can handle my backpack trips easy.

I ventured into the deep, dark, grizzly and wolf infested backcountry of Wyoming again this past weekend. HA HA ... if I make it sound scary, it makes the story better!

Anyway, found some sweet bucks and a trillion bugs. I found a buck that might be the winner......a taker! Take a look at the WEBCAST below and photos. Gotta watch the webcast. The buck with several extras is only in the video.

Another backcountry backpack trip. It was a little disappointing, but I did end up seeing a real nice typical. Saw maybe 25 bucks over 3 mornings and 2 evenings.

Watch the webcast! How big is the big buck?

Another trip into the high country of Wyoming. This time my son, Devan, came along. He has a tag for Wyoming too. We found some real nice bucks, but nothing huge. Well, one is a wide buck. Definitely a taker for Devan. I don't have any photos of him, just video.

BIG BUCK DOWN BABY!

So, after 11 scouting days in Wyoming, I decided to end the scouting and go hunting. So, I went looking for the 5x5 I found on my 2nd scouting trip. I also knew of another potential taker in the area.

Packed in with a horse from Yellowstone Horse Rentals in Afton. On opening morning I saw the buck I ended up taking. He was big and I wanted him. I also saw the 5x5, but he really hadn't grown much more from early Aug.

Opening evening and day 2 were tough. But on morning of day 3 I spotted my buck and watched him bed under a stand of pines. After a quick bite to eat, I was on my way. I really didn't think I had a chance to get him. I know of so many things that can go wrong, so all that was dancing in my head. But because of that, maybe that's why it worked. ?????

I was careful going down the hill on the stalk, checking wind, watching for other bucks, trying to spot my buck before he caught glimpse of me. I took my time, stayed low, remained confident, and eased down the hill.

Everything worked great and I put myself 50 yards from the bedded buck. being on a steep hill, I set my sight to 43 yards and decided to launch one as he bedded. I hit him perfect, the broadhead did it's job and the buck died after just 45 yards.

Incredible adventure!!! To really appreciate it, you guys need to watch the webcast. Great time for me. Great memory. Great accomplishment. Luck shined on me.
WATCH THE WEBCAST!!! It's 25 minutes, but worth it I think.

I'm on the mountain!!!! Opening day is tomorrrow. Saw 9 bucks this morning. No takers, but I believe there's one here. Was hoping for weather this week, but not looking too good. Deer hunting skills shall be put to the test. So excited!!!!!!

Saw a few bucks today, but most were the same as yesterday. It's warm and the deer aren't too active. I'm still confident that there's a big one somewhere close.

I wanted to update each day, but.............

Anyway, HEAVY HAWG DOWN!!!!!

The first few days of the hunt I saw a few bucks, but nothing big. On Wednesday, the snow stacked up and the deer emerged from the heavy timber and started moving. I first laid eyes on this buck I shot on Wed. night. I didn't know if he was a taker or not. Then I saw him on Thursday morning, realized his extras were better than I thought and that he was real heavy. So, I made a play and got set up and made a 400 yarder. On video! So, watch the webcast.

I had estimated the buck at close to 200. He is actually 209-210 with a 200ish frame. Heavy, heavy, heavy. He's cool as heck. Fun hunt.
