Habitat stress

I went out for a hunt for the first time this week and was shocked to find some serious (apparently) beetle kill swaths in some areas that I have hunted most of my life. There is one area that is probably a 25 square mile area in the Malheur River unit that I could see from a high hill that has been decimated by something. I thought from above it was a fire but when driving through it, it is just that about 1/3 to 1/2 the trees are dead, no needles left at all. It has affected both the Ponderosa and the Red Fir (Douglas Fir). I am curious if any of you guys have been seeing the same thing in widespread swaths or if this is just in this localized area.

Yes Beetle kill is common. I have had some Ponderosa trees here killed by beetles. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon
