Henry Mountains Muzzy Hunt

While still looking for our # 1 buck we learned that our # 2 and # 3 had been shot by other hunters. It was time to find another buck. Here are some of the bucks we turned up. None that really got the blood pumping. (Crazy Right ? ) Haha

Friday Morning we still hadn’t seen "the one". We decided to look into a new area where we had seen some bucks before. Looking straight up the mountain, we spotted some antler tips on the skyline. It ended up being 6 bucks, but nothing big. We were ready to move on when buck #7 stepped out in the open. Whoa! Heart Jumped !! The "No Doubter" buck was staring us in the face! They had enough of us staring at them and started moving off. The chase was on! We were able to get out in front of them as they ducked into the trees. A few minutes later they started out into the open again. Ranged, dialed and ready to shoot. 298 yards up the hill. Great shot made! The buck went 10 yards and tumbled down the hill. It was over. BBD !! What an amazing ride this year has been. 21 days on the Henry’s in 2022 looking for the best bucks we could find, only to end up taking a buck we had never seen before. you have to love the unpredictability of hunting. A huge Thank you to all the great guys/ gals we met on the mountain and to all who chipped in with info and past experiences. The biggest thank you and so much Love to Family as this was the ultimate Family Hunt from Fourth of July weekend straight through the end. The Henry Mountains is a Magical place! The Buck was unofficially scored and came in at 201 1/8" and was 31" Wide. A Stud deer for sure. We guess him to be 6 + years old.

Its been so much fun to follow along OpeningDay.!! What a great year for you. While I'm sorry your #1 buck disappeared, you sure got a fantastic "consolation buck". Love the mass and width, and what a handsome cape.! Congrats buddy.! Nothing better than being surprised like that and getting the heart pumpin.!

Hot dog! That is an incredible buck and it sounds like you guys had the experience of a lifetime to go along with it. That is what it is all about!

Congratulations man, im glad it all came together. It was a pleasure meeting you guys up there and talking. Y'all are a good bunch of dudes. That's a heck of a birthday present for him too!

Congrats on a great buck!

You made the most of your once in a lifetime opportunity. Congratulations on a terrific trophy and thanks for sharing your experience with us…

See you put a brake on it. How did it shoot w/o the brake? Could it be manageable, or a shoulder buster? I really don’t like brakes, but my Muzzys shooting 85 to 100 grains pack a wallop. That think might really kick.

Honestly, I never did shoot it without the Brake. The Brake is custom built and performs great. The percussion is pretty intense, but the recoil is light. I am shooting nearly 160 grains by volume with a .285 ELR bullet.

Mine kicked like a mule without the brake. Now it’s fine. LOUD!!!!! Pack some earplugs

That’s a lot of powder!!
Even if Utah outlaws scopes you can still use it in AZ and NM. Since you posted I have looked those up. Very nice and might have to try one.

Can't use scopes in new Mexico any more.

But even still just drill and tap some open sights on it and it will still way out perform the rest of the muzzloaders on the market.

Super cool thread! Thanks for taking us along on yer adventure of a Lifetime! And to score on a magnificent buck makes it all the better!!! What a hunt! So many incredible big buck photos in this thread. Congratulations!!!

Well, the hunts are over and I’ve finally found the time to get back into the groove of real life. Bring back the fall please!!! Haha. The 60 day drying period has now passed and we will be hoping this guy can sneak into the book. Gross at 201 1/8”, he may be close. I thought you guys might like to see the Euro mount we put together while we wait on the taxidermist. This buck will be going on a pedastal mount and displayed proudly in the “ trophy” room. I would love to see any pedastal mounts you guys might have in your home. Thanks again guys.
