Who works for an employer and who is an employer?
I'll start by saying I have 35 union carpenters and 5 office workers. A full 1/3 of the carpenters get over union scale. What a plick I must be to pay them extra. All are legal by the way.

I opereate completely off the grid....no workers comp, no payroll tax, no unemployment ins and no liability ins......I only hire illegals and they get zero benifits....other than cash money.

Life is good.

Damn JB;

If I had known that, I would have charged you twice the amount for those knives!!!!

RELH

P.S. Yea! I know your reply will be that you paid twice what they were worth. HA HA HA beat you too it.

i got 1 employee and she gets all my paycheck. and she is legal. she also sleeps with the boss (that b me)

I am an electrical contractor and I have about 10 employees all legal. I am not union and never will be because I started my company and worked like hell to build it and I'll be damned if my employees are gonna dictate how my business is ran. For the record, all my employees are paid extremely well and I take very good care of them and their families. My guys are extremely happy and it shows in their paychecks and mine as well.

CAforkedhorn;

If you do take good care of your employees with decent wages and working conditions, you will never have to worry about them going union on you. The unions only took hold due to employers treating their workers like slave labors and not giving a damn about their welfare or living conditions.

RELH

CAforkedhorn well said. I have 20 employees and I pay better than my competitors. I agree with you on unions.
I do think unions had their place in history. But in this day and age they are a corrupt organization at best and have no need.

"dude, nothing we can say will make us like as childish/silly as the rants you post. We HAVE posted the parts, you chose to ignore them. We get it, you like soldiers that sell out their fellow soldiers for political gain, and you hate or hold in contempt those that take a stand. We get that you manage to see NOTHING but bad in Republicans, and nothing put pure and honorable intentions from fellow limp wristed libs. We got it already, now move on."

Back in the day Unions TOLD politicians where to stand on issues, now Unions ASK politicians where to stand on issues, which more often than not is way left and Socialist in policy. My employer, for a few more weeks, is Union so I am active in the Union to have a voice. The AFL-CIO is as far left of an organization as MoveOn.org. I dislike 95% of what Unions stand for now.

Back before I started my own company, my old boss enlisted the help of some union electricians for a particular job that was being accelerated. I laughed my ass off when they showed up on the job with their chairs and umbrellas. We said what in the hell are you guys doing, and they replied that they get to sit down when they work on panels and that there is certain things they do not do because it was an apprentices job. One guy took like 2 hours to make up a panel, one that I could have done in about 30 -45 minutes. What a bunch of lazy pukes. Needless to say, my old boss sent them dudes back to the hall and told the IBEW go to hell. After that they started filing false reports with the labor board on every job (basically fraud) which in turn holds up the money to the contractor until investigated. Nobody ever busted the IBEW for filing false reports. Go Figure!! I typically now try and stay away from the prevailing wage jobs although I am doing one right now in Ridgecrest. I thoroughly enjoy being a SCAB as they call us.

I HATE THE LAZY POS UNION WOKERS. PLAIN AND SIMPLE THE UNION MAKES YOU LAZY. WHEN MY WIFE WORKED FOR THE IRS SHE JOIND THE UNION. I ASKED HER IF IT WAS BECAUSE SHE DIDNT WANT TO WORK FOR HER MONY....................................... I HAVE 8 TO 10 EMPLOYEES AND I GAVE MY DAD HALF OF MY COMPANY TO HELP HIM OUT SO I SUB HIM OUT WHEN I NEED HIM. I WILL NEVER AND I MEEN NEVER THATS RIGHT NEVER BE A LAZY POS UNION WOKER. AND IF YOU ARE A UNION WORKER ALL I ASK IS DO YOUR JOB............................................. DONT ASK SOMBUDY ELSE TO DO IT...............................

I work for the same outfit pro does. I was active in my union for 27 years. For alot of reasons I went over to the dark side and now supervise 11 Union employees.

Collective bargining has saved the working man in this country. If you don't believe that take your skills and go to work at Wal-Mart!

Union or non-union is all about perspective. I started covered under the union and didn't feel bad about cashing those checks. Now I am management and I definetly have had some issues with them. Here is a pic of the job I am on. Can anyone guess what it is and where?

There are over 8,000 workers on this project and climbing. We expect to peak at just over 10,000.

How do I contribute to the economy? I recently bought 2400' of black plastic pipe and 300 cu.ft. of fertilizer. I'll contribute a lot more in about 3 months.

Clifhunter cracks me up. I think he hates the unions almost as much as I do. If you work hard and are valuable to your employer he/she will treat you right and if he/she doesn't, jump ship and find one that will. Unions were formed so that lazy people wouldn't have to work hard. Seen it with my own eyes. My brother is a member of the CCPOA which is some correctional officer union. Good god these people get raises if they have a medical evaluation, all on the taxpayer dime, and it's unreal how much time off they get. My brother has more paid time off than I do and I own my own business. I keep telling him that someday their gonna benefit themselves right out of a job as soon as the taxpayers wake up and see that there is a lot of people out there that would babysit scum for about $15.00 an hour.

'Unions were formed so that lazy people wouldn't have to work hard.'

May be, but doesn't mean that all union workers are lazy POS's.
I work , every day of the week, with some of the hardest working people I have ever seen.

Yea, better make it a stout chair and dont worry about the umbrella it will get in the way of the 4" sch. 40 pipe I have to hang tomorrow!

Yes, but which project. The current projected cost is 9.2 billion, but I predict it will top out at 11.

15$ an hour...who...scum. That's a concept scum babysitting scum. I bet I know how they will supplement their income...smuggle a little contraband.

I'm not at all bashing you for being union bro, I'm just pokin' some fun. I think you would agree that there are a helluva lot of lazy workers in the union.

BTW you should get an apprentice to hang that pipe for you :) J/K

Here's my two cents. I have worked as a carpenter both union and non union. The last 7 years I have been working in management working my way up to a project manager until recently then I went back to the field as a project superintendent. I work for a G/C that contracts with union and non-union subcontractors, so I will give you an objective view (in my opinion...LOL).
When it comes to bids usually the non union subs are the lowest, but not as low as you think. Their labor is about 1/3 the cost of the union shops and when labor typically can run around 60% of the cost you would think the bids would be about 40% lower, well there not. They usually only run about 5% lower. Why, is the sub owner pocketing the extra money or is the production rate of the non-union worker that much lower? From experience I say the non-union worker is less productive due to inexperience, lack of training and the attitude of who cares I'm only getting $15 bucks and hour with no benefits. Come back work is also a factor. The typical non-union sub has more come back work due to a work force that suffers from the above mentioned. Safety is another factor. I have more trouble with non-union subs regarding safety then their union counter parts. I don't know if this is because of the above reason or the owner?s attitude towards safety or both.
Now does this mean I love unions? No, I hate dealing with the rules and regs they impose, like when I had a carpenter welder weld a 5/16" clip onto a mudlug for the handrail shoe to sit on the iron workers threw a hissy. "That's our work, whaaa. I'm going to get my BA, whaaaa.
Bottom line is I wish I could use union subs without the unions.
CAforkedhorn, I'm sure you have the best hands, you treat them well and they are the most content workers out there, but I would put the typical union hand up against the typical non-union hand any day of the week and would end up with better quality work. Not to mention quickest and safest. And just to clarify 99% percent of our jobs are private sector not prevailing wage.

Truth is, when I hired on I had no idea they were union, then when I was told they are but I didn't have to join I didn't. But then I started learning how the 'gig' works and I discovered the union dictates my pay/benefits, and the ONLY way as a cr5aft person I could have any say was to not only join the union but get involved in it. I have never been one to just pay the money, I am a get my hands dirty kind of guy so I became a union steward and became the Legislative chair for the local. I attended multi-state meeting where I heard how republicans were the cause of all that is bad, and how John Kerry (2004) was going ot solve all the worlds ills, including the head of the AFL-CIO for Utah, who sadly passed away recently, said that with the dems in charge POVERTY would end. I asked how Kerry and company was going to do that. There were 220 libs in the room and me. I truly was concerned for my safety for asking such a simple question. Over teh course of the next couple of days I had MANY take me to the side and THANK me for standing up to th e"loomey left" in the AFL-CIO. I have gone round and round with the folks and the union hall on almost every key political issue, we rarely agree before/after, but most are people I consider friends. They call my the conservative conscience of the union hall. I take that as a high compliment. The day I quit will be the LAST day I EVER belong to a union.

Pro, that's not abnormal. What I think is, that I bet there are more non-union dems then union dems. That's my opion from listening to the workers talk on the jobsites.

Man I would bet all that I own including my kids college fund that any one of my non union electricians would wire anything faster and with just as good of quality as your union electrician. Why you ask, because my guy won't need the chair and the umbrella and he won't be crying if someone else does part of it for him. My guy also when he's done whippin the union boy's ass won't need to go on stress related leave. :p

I've never had a job outside of occasionally cleaning car windows at busy intersections. I did have a gig selling oranges for awhile but that didn't pan out too well cuz I kept eating most of them.

I do assist local landlords by occupying their Section 8 apartments and the dairy industry by eating large blocks of government supplied cheese. My largest direct contribution locally is theft. Plain and simple I think globally, but steal locally. This causes people to spend money with local merchants to replace their stolen items...in some cases 2 or 3 times.

Well I hear sirens coming my way, so I'll probably be stimulating the local law enforcemnt community via job security and sustained municipal funding.

Uncle Ransom, could you do me a favor and stimulate the local bail bondsman for me? :)

I'm sure you have the best hands. Consider yourself fortunate because the "typical" non-union hand is not better.

FTW

Your alive!!! Where have you been? Not jail again?

If you need the link to the chat room just ask ahole.
