Applications for spring black bear controlled hunts runs Jan. 15 through Feb. 15

There are several ways to apply for a controlled black bear hunt this spring

Hunters looking to apply for 2022 spring's controlled hunts for black bear can apply from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15. Information on the spring 2022 controlled black bear hunt can be found in the Idaho Big Game Seasons and Rules book.
Hunters must have a 2022 hunting license in order to apply for controlled hunts, and there are several ways to apply:
  • Licensed Vendors: Taken electronically at any Fish and Game office or license vendor.
  • Online: Hunters can apply on the Fish and Game website. There is an internet service charge of 3 percent of the transaction in addition to the nonrefundable application fee ($6.25 per person).
  • Telephone: Applications can be placed over the phone by calling 1(800)554-8685. The charge for processing telephone applications is three percent of the transaction plus $6.50. This is in addition to the nonrefundable application fee ($6.25 per person).
  • Do not mail in applications. They will not be accepted.
Controlled hunts are hunts with a limited number of tags allocated by a random drawing, unlike a general season hunt, which allows hunters to purchase tags over the counter. Controlled hunts are often desirable because of location and timing, and success rates are usually higher than general season hunts.

Junior hunters must be between the ages of 10 and 17 to participate in any bear controlled hunt, but a 9-year-old may buy a junior license to apply, provided the hunter is 10 years old at the time of the hunt for which they are applying.

Controlled hunt applications for spring 2022 black bear close on Feb. 15. Successful spring black bear applicants will be notified no later than March 10. Any leftover tags for spring bear controlled hunts go on sale April 1.

still trying to figure out what you need to apply for? from my understanding all the spring bear units went to over the counter? maybe the within 1 mile of private line in the regs would require you draw? but in 22 and 31 its pretty hard to get away form 1 mile of private property at least as the crow fly's, maybe 32A you need to draw to hunt the whole unit. i need to look into this a bit more unless someone here knows?

Nailed it, draw tag allows unit wide hunting. OTC tag has restrictions.

But isn’t 31 still a draw option. There’s no where in that unit a mile from private. I’m assuming of course it’s straight line/crow flys being the standard

22-1 draw tag is valid in 31 and 22. 31 has a few spots that are more than a mile from private, but not a whole lot.

yeah, there are a few spots i guess in 31 also that are a little more then a mile from private. how the hell are they going to enforce it though?

They'll enforce it the same way they enforce everything else, they wait for a phone call turning someone in.

It's going to be tough for the hound hunters trying to hunt public land within a mile of private. Anyone who's ever chased a pack of hounds knows that those mutts and the bear have no concept of private property and the race will end where it ends. I can see an honest law abiding hound hunter getting a ticket before this is all over, F&G considers the dogs as a method of take, therefore if the mutts cross private or tree on private the hunter is trespassing.

First year I haven’t put in. Just didn’t see the point with the rule change. I’ll be hunting those draw units this year. 1 mile from private. Though I’m guessing they’ll be the busiest units around so maybe I won’t

I’d have to look again to be sure but yeah, I’m pretty sure there will be hounds in these units. Basically no point for these draws now. Just as good as any over the counter tag now. They’ll get the hell shot out if them and I imagine the draw goes away completely in a year or so.

May take some pressure off other units this year. Everyone running to these units they could never hunt before

You must be sleeping at the wheel there OW, 4 days late on this info.

Are you being paid to do that OW?
You're kidding, right?? :ROFLMAO:

Background: many, many years ago, like in the late 1980s, I started writing the "In the Field" page/column for Rocky Mt. Game & Fish magazine. I covered AZ, NM, ID, CO, NV, WY, MT & UT. I did that page until I officially retired about 2 yrs. ago. Because of the publication lag, however, I had to be selective in what I used so it wasn't already stale by the time the issue hit the stands.

Some of the input came from the various press releases from the states' game & fish agencies, which I received automatically via email, even before their web sites began providing such info. I still get those releases for a couple states. So it's doesn't take much effort to post them with a quick copy/paste for those who don't get them or visit the web sites.
