LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-06 AT 04:54PM (MST)[p]The United States is actively trying to hold open dialouges with all these conutries as well. It's just that they won't talk with us unless we meet their idiotic conditions. This is a step in the right direction for both us and Iraq - it means that the Iraqi government is recognized as being sovereign by other Arab nations- we should encourage them to do so. They are neighboring states - for us to consider it as "treason" is just like us expecting Mexico not to meet with Guatemala after the Mexican-American war, or more to the point, expecting Japan not to meet with China after WWII. We have to remember that Iraq really doesn't consider us as an "ally", we are a conquering force that is helping them re-establish a democratic form of government - hopefully we can in the future consider them allies in the same sense that the Japanese and the Germans are now. Granted they are not our allies like Great Britian and France, but they are not our enemies like North Korea, China and Iran. In the aftermath of WWII - Japan and Germany were not necessarily friendly towards us - but being defeated they recognized our responsibility to help them beuild their nation back to strength. As a consequence, we have not had any hostilities with these countries since then and have established a healthy trade and business relationship (I am just saying the relationship is healthy - lets not get into who it is healthy for!). Despite the hostilities in Korea and Viet Nam the US presence in Japan has helped in a great part to stabilize Asia and we have been able to mitigate the threats that were present there prior to WWII. The same thing happened with Germany - our success in the Cold War (and by success I mean lack of war with Russia) had a lot to do with the fact that our presence in Germany and Poland and other Western European states helped stabilize the region. Hopefully this will happen with Iraq and Afghanistan over time. Maybe Iraq is a key to stabilizing the middle east - maybe it is a way that we can nuetralize the threat the Iran poses to us. Maybe having over 100,000 troops parked next to his borders makes Amenizajhd think twice about his relationship with us - he may threaten but he knows he is in for a long and protracted conflict if he does threaten Israel or Iraq or Suadi Arabia or the Kurds. That is a can of worms he doesn't want to open - despite his threats and posturing.
