It's Started!!

Another, Not Selected...
Year after year the same results. And there's no guarantee it'll happen in the next 20 years.
Know I'll draw a utah elk tag within 3 years, points will guarantee that.

Not in Utah if you are a new, young hunter, or you are mentoring a child or youth. They may literally never draw. In Idaho at least there is always a chance.

My family went 0-9. But extended family has a deer and Antelope tag that I will be able to join.

Killing the # 5 all time non-typical archery elk Idaho, is pretty damn cool.

I will not top him, but I’ll have fun trying!!!.

Not true, those with no points always have a chance to draw a tag in Utah. But no sense to get in the weeds. Every state has the right to run things how they’d like. I’m just glad the results are finally out.

Nothing for me but my 15 yo daughter drew 31 bull which I am excited about. And my son drew that same tag last year. Dang kids stealing my tags! :)

Go check em!! Good luck to all
Got lucky and drew Elk in Unit 11. Time to call field biologist for Craig Mountain area. Not sure where to start scouting but I camp in Waha often, especially around huckleberry season. May have to start in the China Creek area. Anyone with any info for me to go check out will also be very much appreciated. Get ready for some way points ONX.

Hunting partner drew 46 Pronghorn rifle. The schedule is now beyond full, time for some serious vacation calculus. Going to be a couple sick call-ins for sure. We have five tags in four states. The logistics planning begins.

With it being random, it becomes pretty simple mathematics. For every person that draws a 5% tag once every 20 years (the average), there will be a standard deviation on either side, so extreme that some in the sample will draw 3 tags in 20 years and some won’t draw in 60 years. But the fact is there are plenty of hunts that are better than 5% odds and most people also put in for 3 species so it’s not 5% anyways.

I am fine with the system as is however I would not care one bit if there was a 2 year waiting period after successful antlered only hunt draws.

I do also wonder what would happen if instead of the current version of things,
you said - residents can pick 2 species out of the 6 to apply for (deer, elk, antelope, sheep, moose, goat) while non residents can only choose 1 of the 6. I imagine this would decrease sheep/moose odds and increase Antelope odds but so be it. It would allow residents a chance to put in for trophy species and regular in the same season which to me increases the excitement and opportunity.

I’ve put in for two controlled hunts in ID and drew both times first try. First moose in 2019 then elk this year on a 2% draw odd hunt.

Also first year I put in for elk in NM famed Gila unit I drew in 2018. Less than 2% there. My buddy in the same Gila unit drew twice in 3 years.

Some think there’s a conspiracy, I think all the bad luck in my life finally just turned good as of late. Maybe there’s some advantage to first timers to get you to keep applying for life after you draw. Not really being serious here. Obviously I’m a fan of the random draw structure lol.

I drew both an elk permit (2046) and a deer permit (1051), both in unit 66A.
The late deer hunt had particularly tough odds, so perhaps that is a good hunt!? :)
The opportunity to hunt mule deer with a rifle late into November is pretty rare these days. My November has suddenly become quite full.

I agree that limiting applications to certain species instead of all three would increase odds. It's kind of a no brainer.

Here is what Idaho needs to do !! Take ALL the Non Residents OUT of the draw pool that we have now !! And take the tags allocated for the NR & let them draw out of that pool !!! Increase Idahoan odds & NR odds

Or just hunt OTC like everyone else does. Be thankful you can get an elk and deer tag every year. Idaho has a system in place that at least resident families can still hunt together. Better that some western states.

My drinking was to drown the tag blues instead of celebrate, but how could you be depressed on such a great weekend?!? I struck out again this year, but I have an OTC tag I get to go hunt. All is good!!

Downfall of a no point system.
No point system is the best thing about the Idaho draw.

You already have multiple western states with point systems if that is what you like. The only advantage to point systems is you can predict when you will likely draw.

Point systems are like Socialism. It seems like a good idea until you understand the long term consequences. The math isn't complicated.

I would give up all my points in MT, WY, CO, NV, AZ and UT for them to go to a random draw like NM or ID.
