Well opening morning of the deer hunt on Saturday found us sweating up the hill in the dark to get in a good position to glass. We hiked into a locked gate area at an attempt to avoid the craziness that is 2B. After a 30 min hike we were in place behind the gates and ready for some light to start glassing. As the sun is making its way up towards the East I hear the all too familiar sound of a gasoline engine. I pull up my binos to see what is going on and see an enclosed ATV with 6 orange bearing hunters piled inside of it. Having no idea how they got behind the gates I am pretty upset as I see them driving right up the middle of the canyon that we had set up to glass.
We did end up seeing quite a few deer after the ATV had moved out of the area but no shooter bucks. We decided to pull an afternoon drive (oh the hoof) up a big ridge to see if we could get some bedded bucks moving for my buddy. As luck would have it, as we are crossing one of the roads near one of the gates, we run into a game warden that was off the clock doing some hunting of his own. He asked if we had seen anyone driving up the canyon beyond the gates and we confirmed that we did.
That evening, after a nice nap on the hill, found us in the same spot to glass the canyon we were in that morning. Sure enough, right around 4:30 PM here comes the ATV again. This time they spot us sitting on the hill and give us a nice friendly wave which I did not return. Just as I am saying to my Dad that I wish that game warden were around, I see a NMDGF silver truck blazing down the road with his lights on. Justice! We watched the meeting through our binos and at one point it seemed to get a little heated as I could hear the f-bomb being tossed around.
I am not sure what the outcome of their meeting was other than being escorted out of the gates. The next morning we hiked back into the same canyon because of the number of deer we were seeing and were hoping to catch a big buck moving. Just after first light we see three hunters walking up the road. I assume it was the same guys on the ATV because they spotted us on our glassing point and gave us a nice one finger salute.
Unfortunate that we had a negative encounter with these folks back there but it was good to see the G&F enforcing the laws.
