Little bit of fabricating

Neither of us are fabricators, but we just had to give this a try.

Myself, and My bro-in-law ( biohazardman ) decided to have a go at a skinning rack for the back of the truck, as we have grown tired of skinning on the ground all the time.

After a bit of cussing and discussing, we got to measuring and cutting.

Here is the contraption prior to polish and paint.

It needs a bit of grinding on the welds, as it was the first time I have ever welded, and Bio, has only done it a couple of times before.

Needless to say he is much better at it, though we both need practice.

And here is our first dinner guest, though I think she will be a bit stringy for my tastes.

It took 20 feet of 2" square pipe, a hand crank winch, and 2 pulleys. It breaks into 2, 4 foot sections to fit in the bed of the truck for transport.

8 foot from the receiver to the top of the pole, 9 foot 6 inches from the ground to the top. We will probably get a different gambrel as that one is a bit long for the height, but it should be great after that.

I can hang from it easily ( I figure I equal one old fat Whitetail ( at least ) ), and I doubt it would even tilt if we hung a bull elk in all it's glory, from it.

Hopefully Bio will post some pics after it's gone through paint, and then we can test it on his Mcgregor hunt this coming weekend.

Thanks for looking,

NMYB

Looks a bit like mine. I drew up an plan for my father-in-law and a couple days later he had it done! I had him use pipe so I could loosen the bolt and it swing it aroung to help with loading. I loaded my oryx no problem. After using it once, I figured out some tweaks I have to make for next year. Its not the prettiest thing, but it saved me a lot of aches and pains.

Sanpat,

How high is your from ground to the top?

We have added an eye-bolt near the top on the back side, so we can attach a tie down to the center of the bed, to prevent a bit of sagging forward.

We thought about doing the swiveling build, but didn't have the materials.

Nice dark horns on your oryx.

Those look way better than the ones they sell.

Not high enough! I had to put a board inside the bottom piece to raise it up high enough to get the oryx off the ground. I'd extimate it to be 10 or 11 feet high. I'm pretty short so it looks a lot taller! I think I might use that idea of anchoring it to the bed.

The reason the horns are so dark is because I just finished rinsing if off. They were actually pretty grey

Yeah, that's what I thought too! Weather permitting I'll get it painted today and the last thing I gotta do is drill the hole for the pin in the receiver end. Hopefully get some finished product pics and post them up! :)

Big thanks to NMYB for all his help! Like He said, hopefully we'll get to test it out this upcoming weekend on my McGregor oryx hunt!

Bio, we may be out on Mcgregor with a friend also. If we are driving my truck it will be a 02 white 4runner. Maybe we will see you out there.

I have a hoist and cleaning area already set up at home, but, otherwise, it makes a lot of sense to build something that is portable off of the truck.

Remember, the higher the better. Of course that creates cantilever problems.

NMPaul... Yeah, I'll look for you out there! We'll be in a 2 tone silver '01 Ford F250. We are camping out there someplace, don't know where yet though! If we hook up and you need a skinning post, let me know! :) I'll PM you my phone number...

Did get it painted today but no pics as it is still drying! Kinda a camo paint job! Will post pics tomorrow!

Sounds good.

That looks really professional.

I think that strap to the bed of the truck is a real good idea.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-21-10 AT 03:05PM (MST)[p]Looks great. I think the tie down is a great idea also. I built a rack for my hitch last year to hold a few coolers. I found that the box tubing isnt very tight in the reciever. I ended up using the tubing from an old hitch. You can also buy it from a local steel shop or trailer store. It is much thicker with rounded edges not square. I was very happy with it as it made the fit much tighter. Just an option. The hoist does look great and nice painting!

Good job guys on your hoist for game. Here is a pic of the one I had a friend build for me but he altered my design some but still works fine and breaks down into 2 pieces for storage in back on pu. I can raise the whole main square stock tubing to a height of about 10 ft. Next time I use it, I will bet a better pic to show the full unit in service and what I use for hoisting etc.

I just found my pictures from my first Antelope hunt in WY back 3 years ago and here is setup I used. All made from 2x2 1/4" wall thickness steel. The previous picture above is my own setup and this one belongs to a friend, but same setup but some modifications on mine to allow access to inside bed of pu with tailgate down and stronger gussets top and bottom.

Mine was made by my friend who lives outside of Albq. He is pretty good at designing something, he builds "Hot Rods" for a hobby and extra money.

Here is the oryx I got on McGregor Range... no monster but the skinning rack did great! I am sure we could have added at least several hundred more lbs. and the rack would've held up as well. It didn't bow or lean at all!
