I have a cabin there and am currently hunting elk elsewhere. They are trying to rebuild the herd numbers in that area which means they dramatically cut back on cow tags but not on bull tags. We hunted first rifle last year and 3 of 4 of us could have killed a cow. Only 1 of us even saw a bull and he was not able to get a shot. Also, the dates are pretty late this year and that means very little if any rutting activity. However, that means a longer break between bow season and first rifle. Private land hunters always seem to do well but public is pretty tough at the moment.
The good news is that so far the high country is lush. And from what I saw, it’s a really good calf crop. Herd numbers are rising, there should be a fair amount of raghorns this year. In other words, shoot the first legal bull you see. Good luck
