Hey guys, there has been a lotta of bashing on NMDGF and how they manage some stuff. I encourage you all to listen to this podcast with the Idaho Fish and Game director to see what is going on with how they decide management and to understand how large scale they manage on. If we want better management they need more funding to bring more biologists and specialists to manage smaller areas.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-18 AT 10:53PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the information!

I would gladly pay more for the deer tags to create more funding. I would rather see the tag price go up than the number of tags stay so high.

The problem I have with NM is all the effort they put into other animals like BHS and removal of other animal like the Barbs for an animal that's too dumb to survive. But because BHS draw big money it gets a pass. Had nothing to do with management. We manage money animals IMO.

How do we not have money to save deer, higher biologists or manage deer but transplant big horns across the state. And in some cases on private land. In which 99 % of us will never hunt

Amen, The G&F are not perfect but we need to understand what they are up against from outside environmental groups.

Heck yeah. I would 100% pay more for both deer and antelope to help the department fund more projects for them. Only problem is the license fees are through the legislature so getting them changed is a whole nother ball game. $60 for javelina vs $41 for deer. That needs to be changed.

In NM money isn't the issue. G &F has plenty of money. It's getting the legislature to let them use it. And getting G&F to do more than people management. All they really do is control the amount of people who go hunting.

They all say mule deer is a species of great concern yet they do little to nothing for them. They can start by killing more elk that are moving into the all southern/ northern deer units. We have enough elk we don't need them in our prime deer areas

Here?s another one to listen to that has to do with antler point restrictions. Hunt Talk with Randy Newberg podcast EP 094. I went to school for wildlife management and some people don't understand what an antler point restriction does to the bucks age class in a population.

Yes, we need to address the license fees for all species. Javelina fee needs to be decreased and every other species needs to be adjusted based on today's demands. That is set by legislature. How about we have the legislature add the mt. lion license to every deer license? Lion harvest limits stay the same, yet every deer hunter has a lion license. We all know the recipe for increasing deer population numbers: better habitat (burning, thinning, etc) and kill more predators. Not rocket science here, we just get caught up in adjusting buck license numbers up and down, which does nothing for a deer population. Until we force the Forest Service and BLM and State Land Office manage these lands for healthy habitats that support elk, deer, and other wildlife nothing is going to happen. An example would be to force the Habitat Stamp Program to make sure sure every project is 100% wildlife focused. The Dept. just went through a regulation cycle that adjusted license numbers, seasons dates, etc. yet hardly anybody commented. But, we'll get hunters on here complaining later on about the lack of good deer hunting in the great state of NM. What do you want? Get involved, but get informed about how to make the hunting better. Killing males does nothing for a population up or down. We have to affect the habitat and kill more predators to affect a deer population.

I'll bet everyone here that nobody commented during the Dept. regulation cycle!!!!! Thousands of deer hunters in the state of NM, yet hardly anybody comments during the regulation period. Yet, we hear the bitchin' and complaining the next four years about the poor NM deer hunting. Get involved!!! It's all social management!!! Killing bucks does nothing to a deer population. Habitat and predator management is the key to increasing a deer population (along with a rain dance). You want better "deer hunting", get involved and focus on the limiting factors for deer populations which are habitat and predator management.

I agree. The amount of hunters that hunt and comment on this stuff is very disproportionate. Doesn?t mean we don't have guys down at the commission meetings, but there was a meeting in LC about the Barbary, ibex, and oryx rules and there were about 30 people maybe. And I know for sure that there could have been a ton ton of people there commenting on that. Or at least write in your comments to the department.

I agree, we need to get more involved. But to say nobody commented. I do feel like comments don't ever really go that far, but maybe they mean more then it feels at times.

In 2018-2019 hunting season, there were 62,776 first choice applicants applying for deer licenses in NM. I took that from the draw odds data off of the NMDGF website. There were approximately 60-70 written comments during the regulation period this year. That's real data, "hardly" anybody commented on an issue that is socialy based, not biological. Not sure if there is disagreement over bucks only harvest limiting a deer population? I'm just trying to make the point that, for a socially based harvest system, hardly anybody comments during the time that hunting season dates, license numbers, etc. is open for public comment. Why doesn't the NMDGF ask what the hunters want with surveys, etc?
