Mentoring question

So if I mentor my daughter that didn't draw a deer tag this year. My rifle deer tag does she get to hunt all three seasons like a regular youth that draws a deer tag. She did draw the youth elk hunt this year. So she is super excited !

That's a good question. I'm guessing it would only be season specific where it's issued to you.

She's only allowed to hunt the species, unit, gender, season and weapon listed on YOUR permit.

But, you'll still have a great time, I'm sure!

I just called the DWR office and the lady on the phone said she can hunt all three season because she is a youth.

I would get that in writing if it was me.

Hi BIGJOHNT ??Many apologies, but the woman you spoke with was incorrect. Someone on our licensing team noticed this thread and asked me to respond. Youth who are being mentored can only hunt the season listed on the adult permit. They cannot hunt all three seasons.

We're going to follow up at this end with all of our front desk and licensing people to make sure they understand and are giving out correct information.

Thanks,
Amy

I call the DWR in Cedar and spoke to the part-time janitor and he said I could hunt sheep in any open area FYI.

Looks like BIGJOHNT knows the same janitor in Cedar City as Wade Lemon. Kind of funny if you ask me.

Yes, I saw the smiley face, Bess, so I knew you were just having fun at my expense which I don't mind. No harm, no foul!

And you should know me enough by now, to know that I do my homework and NOBODY gets much of a rise out of me. My sense of humor isn't giggly, it's more subtle. (Probably too subtle in most cases!) That's just me.

And I seldom take things personal, even when it's fabricated or twisted to make me look like a "clown", "fool", etc. But in this case, I just didn't want the OP and daughter to end up with a citation and loss of hunting privileges no matter who was responsible for the misinformation. But I'm glad Amy (and you) chimed in, it softened the blow to them a bit! And they'll still have fun!

LAST EDITED ON May-15-19 AT 12:20PM (MST)[p]I think that was a very good question BIGJOHNT. Everyone is saying "AS AUTHORIZED BY THE PERMIT"....but when a youth draws a general rifle season tag, it only lists the any weapon dates in October even though they can hunt all seasons if they "obtain a general-season any legal weapon deer permit"
The mentor program may be a form of 'Obtaining' that tag.

Anyway, that was a very good question to ask.

It definitely was a good question to ask! Especially since it got Amy involved. Now maybe we need further clarification on the definitions of "obtain" and "share" as worded in the quote I posted. Does the youth "obtain" the permit or just "share" the permit? And what's the difference?
Amy? (Are we having fun yet?)

There's no end to the fun with you guys! ;-)

I sent your question to one of our licensing specialists, and this was his reply:

The only thing the youth obtains is an authorization to share the mentor's permit. The word "obtained" is only used once in the Mentoring Program rule, and it is in reference to the youth surrendering a conflicting authorization/permit they obtained so they can share the mentor's permit. The statement that prohibits them from hunting other seasons is in R657-67-5(5): "Take limitations and bag limits apply based on the permit issued, and the issuance of written authorization to share the permit does not confer additional rights to take protected wildlife." In this case, "Take limitations" applies to season dates.

I also noticed that MuleyKiller asked about mentoring youth on a Dedicated Hunter permit and the answer is yes: If it's a Dedicated Hunter permit, the youth can hunt all three seasons with an adult mentor.

>So if the tag was a
>dedicated deer permit then they
>could hunt all three?

Yes, if it's a Dedicated Hunter permit, the youth can hunt all three seasons with an adult mentor.

>Thanks Amy for straightening this out.>

Happy to help, BIGJOHNT. Best of luck to you and your daughter this fall!
