Mule Deer Counties

So the 3 counties that I came up with for NV that don't produce big mule deer bucks is

1. Lyon County

2. Mineral County

3. Esmeralda County

What are everyone's thoughts?

I believe that's more a reflection of the limited numbers of mule deer in those three counties. Mineral county is known to have some absolute giants, but they live where it's illegal to hunt them.

Out of curiously why would you want to know that? All three of the counties you list hold big deer. I think in some areas a lot of deer don't get a chance to get to get that old. Of the three you listed I think Esmeralda might have the worst genetics but there are some big deer in there too. Mineral and Lyon have great genetics if you know where to look.

Thanks for the info. I was going off the B&C and P&Y record books. It is for a project of mine and I'm covering numerous states.

You have to keep in mind that the variance between counties in Nevada is astounding.

From Mohave desert landscape to 13,000 feet in Esmeralda county.

Sage brush to Alpine in the east. Central is a lot of Pinion and Juniper country.

Deer densities vary even from parts within the county.

Esmeralda is small and has few deer, but I have seen some sheds that would make just about anyone's jaw drop. It is going to have low entries simply because of the number of deer.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the deer quality is low. And just because a particular county has lots of entries doesn't mean the quality is higher. It just has more deer, so more chances of coming across a big buck.

Also from year to year, the quality in any given county can change due to fire, drought, winters and water.

This year has been Awesome in Eureka County and the Young bucks have significantly more growth than an average year.

Clear as mud?

Good luck.

What is your project? You are very vague about that. Maybe if we knew and understood, we could be of more assistance.... it's a very odd question to be asked and most ppl are giving you vague and smart assed answers. Record books aren't going to give you any kind of scientific data other than what units ppl claim to have killed deer in that scored well. And that's just the ones that have actually been entered...
