LATE-SEASON COW ELK LICENSES AVAILABLE ONLINE NOV. 7

SANTA FE -- A total of 369 cow elk licenses will be available online at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, to hunters who did not draw a license this season.

Licenses will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, only on the Department of Game and Fish website, www.wildlife.state.nm.us . Hunters are encouraged to visit the website before the sale date to review hunts available and to create an online account if they have not already done so.

The licenses are for antlerless elk in various game management units statewide. The hunts will include 100 licenses for muzzleloaders only, and 269 licenses for any legal sporting arm.

The special late-season cow elk hunts are designed to provide additional elk hunting opportunities without severely impacting the state's elk herds. License fees are $59 for state residents, $331 for nonresidents. License fees will be charged at the time of successful online application. The Valles Caldera National Preserve charges a $300 access fee. Only hunters who did not hold elk licenses for hunts this season are eligible for the late-season hunts. It is illegal for any hunter to hold more than one elk license in the same license year.

To be eligible for the late-season hunts, applicants must have submitted a mandatory harvest report for 2006-2007 if they held deer or elk licenses or permits for that season. Those who did not submit harvest reports can still do so for an $8 late fee by visiting a Department office in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Raton, Roswell or Las Cruces, or by calling (505) 476-8038.

Licenses available:

Muzzleloader only:

Unit 9 -- Nov. 24-30, 100 licenses.
Any legal sporting arm:

Unit 6B -- Valles Caldera National Preserve, Dec. 1-3, 19 licenses ($300 access fee).

Hey Guys,

Very first post here but have been a lurker for a long time. I also got into the "fire sale" in time and picked up a Valles Caldera tag for this weekend and can't wait! I used this as a good excuse to get a new gun and picked up a Tikka T3 Lite in .300 WSM. I was actually surprised that it kicked about like a 12 ga since it weighs about 7.3 lbs ready to go. 3/4" group at 100 yds with winchester 180 gr Accubonds. For a "plastic" rifle, I love the way it shoots! If I'm lucky, I'll post pics next week....hope I didn't just jinx myself!

Great to be here.

Well, guess I didn't jinx myself after all! Was hoping for a larger cow, but a yearling presented itself yesterday morning and I must confess the tenderloin was fantastic last night. An elk in the freezer is always better than a herd in the woods. My photo editor is acting up right now, but will try to resize a pic to post later. Hope everyone else is successful!

Phil,

I was also at the Caldera this weekend. I took a good size cow Saturday afternoon. I was hunting Unit 10. There was not a whole lot of elk in that unit but we were lucky enough to find the few that were there. What unit were you hunting? Congradulations on your elk.

WD,

I got drawn for unit 4, but was also given unit 8 Sunday morning. Took a shot at one Saturday morning in 4, but ended up getting mine in 8 while on my way in to 4. The mud Saturday afternoon on the roads was unbelieveable. It took almost 2 hrs to get back to the HQ, when it only took 1 on Friday. We didn't see too many elk, but I guess we saw enough! I was really impressed with the guys working there, especially Steve. I think he was more excited about my elk than I was. Congrats to you as well!

We were the last ones to check out on Saturday night. My unit was probably one of the furthest back. I didn't get the elk until 4:20. The roads were pretty bad. We didn't check out until 7:40. Steve was very cool. He was also pretty excited when I pulled in with my elk. I hope to draw one of the earlier bull tags next year.
