A buddy and I were fortunate enough to draw late season bow elk tags for unit 17. We would like to hear from anyone that has hunted the unit and has any recommendations. We are considering hiring an outfitter especially if there was an outfitter that would take us in via horseback to a drop camp. Recommendations for outfitters would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Drop camp won’t help there, not much wilderness and what there is doesn’t hold much elk. Hardly any water in wilderness parts. Chase the rains, where it’s green is where the elk will be. Elk #s and quality have gone down over the last few years mainly to drought, but the long range muzzle snuffers have increased harvest of mature bulls. Still a good hunt just not what it once was.

Frontier outfitters hunts that area and would be a good choice if you go the outfitted route.

We do horse back hunts but a drop camp might not be feasible!
