Did any non-residents actually draw a quality tag in Utah this year ?
I have been putting for 14 yrs for everything I can as NR and have drawn zero tags......all I ever get is that "unsuccessful" email....
Would let like to hear NR success to at least keep my hopes up for drawing.

I'm a non-resident and after 12 years I drew a Southwest Desert bull tag. Definitely keep your hopes up. Utah has a wonderful draw system and it can happen any year!

3 years ago, I had 12 NR deer points and drew a Vernon rifle tag. It was a fun hunt. You'll get drawn eventually. My guess is that you're putting in for the Henries or Book Cliffs hunts? Those will tag a bit longer.

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

No.....not Henries.....I know it is best deer unit but my odds are almost zero....Pauns odds a little better but not by much.

Non res here. 2017 I will have 16 elk, 8 deer, 8 antelope, 4 moose, and 4 bear points. One of these years i'll draw something, I suppose. That's what they keep telling me. Come on Nevada.

I think I speak for many residents when I say thank you for helping pay our way.

Non-residents often get a bad rap, some residents think all the good tags go to non-residents because you pay more. Those of us with NR friends and relatives know different.

And if it means anything I know a few residents that have a pretty impressive collection of points and unsuccessful emails too.

My dad and uncles apply every year as non-residents and we usually get 2-3 tags every year. We apply for the pine valley unit which is not the most sought after unit but it has a good herd of deer there.

This year my dad and uncle got buck tags in the fillmore unit which will be a first time hunting there. If you're not too picky with the units you can almost hunt every year or every 2 years in utah

My Nebraska friend just drew a Nebo late trophy elk! It's going to be great!

That counts, huh?

I hunted it last year with another one of my friends (resident) so we know how terrific it can be.

My brother applied for a non-resident limited archery elk and drew 1st choice. He was the Only Non resident selected. Now the biggest factor in all of this is to do your research. I scoured the odds report for the last 3 years and seen out of all the units what ones he had a chance at with 0 pts, if he had 10 or 15 pts I guarantee I would of got him a different tag. Look at the odds per your pts and how many tags they actually give out. Go outside your comfort zone and hunt an area that could have some good potential. Too many people keep applying to a unit that could literally take 14 years to draw a tag when they could of killed or hunted elk 4 times before that. Good Luck guys

My friend and I finally drew Bookcliffs rifle with 15 points. Henry's and paunsy were a lifetime away. It will be a fun hunt.

I drew the Henries rifle tag with 1 point, a Willard peak goat tag with 2 points, a Boulder Mountain elk tag with 13 points, and my brother drew a wasatch elk tag with 0 points.

In 2014 I drew Southwest Desert Archery elk with 5 points. I'm at 20 points for LE deer though and want a Henry's archery or muzzy tag, but since there's no preference tags I'm in the random pool for one tag each.

I had 16 points and drew the Central Mtn Manti early rifle tag. Unless you hit the jackpot on a random tag you have to put in your time or lower your standards.

2 years ago drew a Moose tag with 3 points.....Nothing before that or after that. Have 14 Elk points so "soon" for that!!

I drew a Wasatch late rifle elk tag this year with 12 NR points. I'm not sure if I was in the bonus pool or random. At least there is always a chance for a random draw tag with Utah. Not the case with Colorado.

The critters have to win every time. I only have to win once.

All I can say is......WOW.....that is a lifetime of Utah tags.......congrats!

I now have 21 LE Elk points, 17 Moose Points and 11 LE Deer points.....I feel your pain! Only chance is in the "Random"
Pool" for Moose & Elk, since there is no point creep for the units I put in for. It has been a tough go since the state implemented the tag grab for SFW.

I am 0fer 12 years on everything. I am not the guy who gets random tags. Some guys have luck in the draws others don't.

LAST EDITED ON May-31-16 AT 01:12PM (MST)[p]Utah has about as good of odds as any other state IMO. I drew my max point hunt and at least have a chance again. I have applied for 20+ hunts this year and have had no luck in any state.

When and if I finally draw CO I will be out of their elk game for good. I will apply in UT, NV, NM and AZ. At least in these states I have a chance.

Had a cabin neighbor tell me that one of his friends from Calif. drew an any weapon NR elk tag for the Boulder unit with 0 points--!!

Me and two buddy's drew panquitch lake gen muzzy deer with 5 pts aech, and I will have 9 deer,17sheep,17elk going into next years draw.

Amen Rich,
I hate random drawings and I played random in Utah for 20+ years before points and drew zilch.
In the past 20 years, with points, I've drawn elk, deer, mtn goat and desert sheep. I'll take the kind of "luck" where I get rewarded every year with a point.
Yep, points work if you stay the course!
Zeke

With 20 points I finally quit putting in for the Henrys. Drew Paunsy. I have drawn general deer tags. Personally, I think Utah is doing a pretty good job with their draw system.

I hate points! so you pretty much have 0 chance to draw another great tag in UT if it takes 18-20 now..no thanks! Ill take ID system any day! where everyone is on the same playing field every year.

You have every right to hate something that others love but you're dead wrong about having zero chance to draw without tons of points. Remember, more than half the tags are drawn randomly in Utah.

Do the math. Let's say you only have 1 percent chance to draw a tag with half of the tags in the random pool. So, if you had your way you'd take all the tags and make them all random and you'd still only have 2 percent chance of drawing. Big damn deal! I'd rather be working toward a possible eventual draw than freakin' random every year. There are just some tags that a guy will NEVER have irrespective of the draw system.

That's the nice thing about freedom. We all have an opinion and I respect yours!

Zeke

Id sucks because there's only a ONE year wait if you do draw, it should be 3 to 5. They want that $150 hunting license as quick as possible, they know they wont get it if your on the sidelines.

With Utah it doesn't matter what the system is.

Most hunts only give 1-3 tags with hundreds to thousands of people vying for the those tags. You are playing a lottery every year.

If Idaho split the NR/R pools rather than doing a up to 10% allocation in one pool and provided a license refund if you don't draw it would be a lot better system for non residents.

>I drew a late elk tag
>with 7 points.
>
>It's possible.

Congratulations on the tag!
Zeke

2015 I drew a Nebo early rifle elk tag, I had 4 pts. I shot a great bull and I will now focus on other hunts elsewhere and consider myself very lucky to have enjoyed the experience.
I had a 1-45 chance to draw the one random nr tag.

I drew two great tags with 0 and 6 points in the pre-SFW LBJ entitlement tag expansion era. Since then nothing. This year both my hunting buddy and I failed to draw deer & elk tags for hunts that have never been drawn by applicants with our respective point totals, 14 and 19. Ever.

The random draw odds in that state are basically sheep odds.
