I was lucky enough to draw a mountain goat tag here in Montana. I came down with pneumonia in July which hampered my scouting severely. I found a spot with goats and packed in the first load of camp on Sept 26. The next Saturday I packed in the last load then took the horses home and picked up dad at the airport. My wife dad and I walked in to camp in the dark. We woke up to fog the first day. You couldn't see 100 yards so we stayed at camp. Day two we spotted a goat about a mile above camp, off we went. Three hours later we had him at 300 yards but he was only about 7" so we let him walk. Saw a few others in the distance but nothing we could get to that day.

Here are picks from day 2.

Day 3 was sunny and warm. We headed west out of camp for an initial 1400' climb to the top of the ridge. We were at 9100 feet and headed north along the top of the ridge. A mile later at 10400'we were as high as we could get. We glassed and found 18 goats any where from 1 -6 miles away. We found two billies about two miles east. They were day 4's plan. We gathered up and started back off the mountain. Here's a couple from the top.

We worked our way back down the ridge and stopped above camp where we had topped out that morning. We pulled off our boots and started glassing. We looked for about an hour and didn't see anything new so we decided to drop into camp. We got boots on and all packed up and dad said "I heard a rock move, not fall but move". We called him crazy and then he heard it again. We looked below us and there was a nanny and kid. After some discussion we decided to unload and look at her through the spotter. Immediately I knew we had a shooter. We watched and took a few pics through the scope to verify her horns grew that way.

I got in position to shoot and ranged her at 450 yards. She started to move away up the ridge. When she finally stopped quartered away I held for 480 yards and sent it. She humped and went down. After watching for 15 minutes or so we packed up and headed over.

An hour later we got to her and she was better than we thought.

Not enough service to upload photos, sorry. I'll put up some from work tomorrow

Here are some pictures. I have more at home I'll get posted.

It was dark we were packed and had 1100 feet of elevation to drop in to camp so I field dressed her and left. The next day we climbed up took some more pictures and packed her out.

Camp is the shiny spot in the trees at the edge of the meadow

Her normal horn is 9 1/4" the other is 10". The game warden that checked her in aged her at 9+ and figured she injured her skull as a 2 year old.

My shot entered at the back of the ribs got liver lungs heart and broke the off leg. I couldn't ask for better.
