I am looking at planning a hog hunt,meat hog, not a stinking trophy boar, in Northern CA. this coming spring. After doing a search I have come up with two outfitters in the area that I would like to hunt as it is not too far from home.

The first one is High Country Outfitters based out of Anderson, CA. and they hunt ranches in that area and around Redding, CA.

The second one is North Powder Outfitters that is based in Shasta County and they hunt ranches in that county and in Colusa County out of Williams, CA.

Both offer 1-1/2 days of hunting for about the same price with 99% sucess rate on spot and stalk hunts.

Do any of you have infromation on either of these outfitters that will help me decide which one to go with. If you do not want to state anything in the forum, send me a PM and I will keep it private between us.
I have hunted deer, antelope, elk, bison, but this is a first on pig hunting and I want to have a good experience on this first time hunt. Now to talk my hunting partner's wife into letting him go with me by convincing her she needs some good pork chops in the freezer to go along with all that buffalo meat.

ummm! pig cicles(ribs)!
did you want or even look down south (monterey co!)..
is money the issue?
I think one time I looked at a guide for a day was $800.00 for a hog last year.. 400 s/b max I would think.. I have paid less and gotten a 300lbs about heck 10 years ago or more DFG may also have special draw hunts around the state I drew two and never went!!

where in cali do u live? i know of a place near lake sonoma, (sonoma/mendocino county) good price and lots of pigs.

try pigpointranch.com they run pig hunts out of lake county my father in laws buddy took him and another friend and they got three hogs in one day

I am in the foothills of Yuba County above Marysville or Oroville, CA. I took a look at that Pigpointranch.com and it appears to have good testimonials from previous hunters. also not that far from my home. It will also be considered for a possible hunt. Thanks nuts4bucks for the reccommendation.
Our wives would also love it as there is a casino near by lakeport. Just made it easier to convince my hunting partner's wife to let him go and they go with us.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-28-08 AT 08:14PM (MST)[p]RELH, sounds like a fun, productive hunt that you're planning. I been wanting to do something similar for several years now. Some of the best wild game i've ever had came from a young 150-160 pound boar. It busted out of a canyon and stopped just before going over the rim. I busted him with my 25-06 at 200 yds, just behind the ear. Was a fun hunt, some awesome eating, look forward to doing it again. Good luck and please keep us posted!!

Edit, i take it that these hunts offered are mostly spot and stalk. Was wondering what caliber of rifle, or handgun, you were wanting/hoping to take the animal with? Thanks!

I have Hunted with High Country Outfitters a few times. He is a real nice guy and has almost 100% success on spot and stalk hogs. He has Gotten some good ones too. He has a big piece of property to hunt that is real good for pigs. I got a bear last year with him it was alot of fun. He and his family a really nice people and he works really hard to get you what your after. I hope this helps I would reccomend Rick Murphy at High Country.

Pm me if you have any questions.

Joey;

I am leaning towards of leaving my scope mounted bolt actions at home and taking my Marlin LTD-V 45/70 lever action that I used to bust my last buffalo in Montana.
Only problem with that gun & caliber I limit the range to not over 150 yards using the iron sights and a 350 gr. flat point Hornady interlock bullet. Helps to put a little "fun" back into hunting. Puts a little "ouch" in the shoulder as well since it is a 7-1/2 lb. rifle pushing that bullet at 2100 FPS. I call it my "hillbilly" shooting gun.

Bigcountry3000 thank you for the testimonial for High Country.

RELH, lol, Great response! You're braver than i am. I actually think i could almost do better with open sights on a handgun than i could with a rifle. I put a peep sight on my M94 .375 Win, seem to do Ok w/ that but iron sights on a long gun... bit scary. I'm probably about due to get checked out for glasses! lol

That 350 gr @ 2100 FPS, plain nasty stuff!!! That would put a bad hurt on most anything! Good luck and again let us know how it's going.

Joey;
I may have mislead you. Those sights on the Marlin does consist of a Lyman rear peep sight and a Williams "fire" sight for the front. It is a fiber optic bead sight that is amazing for older eyes. It makes up for a very accurrate shooting setup in all light conditions. First time I used a fiber optic front sight, and I am sold on them. I have ordered one for every one of my iron sighted rifles except the 1874 Sharps. Still use the vernier tang and globe front sight on that rifle.
I will also cop out to putting a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad on that marlin. Not as brave as you mentioned, just a little smarter after a long session at the bench.

I've never used a fiber optic sight. Just haven't really had the chance to i guess but I will take your word for it that they help. Back before i got my own gun, i used one of my Grandfathers old 30-30's. They should have called it a 50-50 cause that was about my average in getting a deer i'd snuck up on. Even fairly close in, i'll admitt that i was no hand on bucks with that old gun.

Far as the kick pad goes, thumbs up! I never heard anybody say you was stupid. That big a bullet going that fast got to kick like a dog bit mule. Lead sled, i'd want one of those!! lol

Sharps? i wanna, i wanna, i wanna have one of those! Tad envious!

I think you have a great plan going and really hope it all works out for you!
