My father-in-law recently passed away and while going through his safe with my mother-in-law I came across this older rifle. Anyone know anything about these models? I'm more curious than anything. I was thinking about taking it to a gunsmith as I'm not sure it would be safe to shoot as is. Any info would be awesome.

It appears to be a model 1890. If it is they were made from 1890 to 1932. Does it have 22 short stamped on top of the barrel?

I would not hesitate to shoot it but make sure the barrel is clean and do NOT try to shoot long or long rifle shells in it. SHORTS ONLY

You should never risk shooting that, anything’s possible.

I know a guy that would repair it……… I think his normal price is around $4,500. He just likes to help families keep their old heirlooms.

If your not interested I know another guy that will give you a couple hundred bucks, to decorate his chain of restaurants with. Be glad to get it to him if you want to get it out of the house before someone gets hurt.

Now, now……… I wasn’t trying to set off a bidding war……. ? Just trying to keep boomer safe…….. wouldn’t want any of the rest of you to get hurt either. Best leave this to a specialist in these matters. ?

What a bunch of underhanded crap. Be careful, he's trying to set you up for the kill.

? Just trying to keep everyone safe, OC.

No need for anyone to get killed or harmed here. These ole relics are just way to sketchy to mess with unless you’re a bonified specialist, it’ll be best to just let me take care of it. I don’t mind at all.

does it really say shorts only???....I have a couple of them that are LR ......the shorts only were the gallery guns......I do have one that says Long only.....

Those aren't cheap anymore.

My grandma had a 22 lr that looked like that. I think it was a model 62. My sister still has it I think.

Us kids learned to shoot with it. The barrel and sights were bent, but if you aimed a little low and to the right, she was right on.:)

I would run another box of wildcats thru that thing in a minute.

Have a gunsmith look it over. It may function well. Based on your serial number it looks like yours was made in 1914. I have the same model and it’s mfg date is 1917. FIL gave it to me many years ago. It was his fathers. He knew I would take care of it. Gun is in my man cave and yes it still functions and shoots. His father used it to shoot snakes in TN.

That is good advice. Any good gunsmith could certify it safe to shoot if it is. I would bet that it is. I have one just like it that I have carried on a trap line for years. It has never failed me. If you plan on selling it make sure to have it appraised. It is probably worth more than you think.

Be careful with the old gallery guns. Back then they used black powder and most places did not clean them. This the bores are crap. Usually still shoot able, but rifling will be bad and decrease value.

…….. nah, no problem LIK2…… the guy with the restaurants never shoots’em….. it’s all good.

They are VERY particular on overall cartridge length.....mine in 22 long will not function with modern 22 longs......they are very slightly longer....

Winchester made some great 22’s here is a few.

Yes it does have 22 short stamped on it. I will try to get a picture of it tonight. Thanks for all of the good insight. Given the date of this gun I am assuming that it was handed down to my father-in-law from his father. While I would love to have it, it really should go to my brother-in-law as a family heirloom. I am pretty sure they are not interested in selling it.

What is on the end of the barrel on the 1890?
