Hi guys, if you hunt and ride e bikes on the #huntthefront Wasatch west archery extended unit it's legal to ride e bikes on the main wasatch crest trail road until you get to the desolation wilderness sign and beyond that. It's illegal to hunt on the north and south side of Scott Hill, (puke hill). All iron mountain estates property (park city), and park city area ski resorts posted or not is off limits to hunting. The game warden and sheriff have been notified. So please remove your trail cameras immediately. The Wasatch West deer unit is great unit so lets keep it that way. Some deer and elk were poached in the iron mountain estates ( park city) in the last few years. Not cool. Some idiot got busted last week hunting deer at deer valley ski resort. Also, it is illegal to use drones to push the elk herd around. This crap needs to stop !! If your not sure where to hunt use onxmaps.com or ask the game warden.

I'm just being a nice guy and warning hunters. The sheriff and game warden have been checking hunters at the front gate of the Wasatch Crest trail off of Guardsman Pass road and at the top of Scott Hill after 10 elk and 3 mule deer have been poached in the past 2 years.

Do you have any links to these trespassing or poaching charges?

Not saying there aren't idiots who do incredibly stupid stuff, but there are numerous areas to hunt on or around Scotts Pass and Peak that are National Forest. One corner goes exactly 0.62 miles down a ridge into one of the Monitor bowls and generally is marked for the private boundary at the bottom. There are also a number of pieces of State Trust land in the area you mentioned that are legal to hunt.

Just for reference, I've spent the last 35 years hunting up there and it's not called the Wasatch West unit at all. That's a general season deer unit. Once the general season is over, it's called the Wasatch Front extended area. I've been around and hunting it since the Osguthorpe's owned the checker board all around Lambs, Millcreek and Iron canyons. Used to be an incredible mule deer hunting area, when they ran sheep in all the canyons, kept all the predators in check and managed the land they ran on. Now a days it's a bit more difficult with the wealth owners up there who have no clue what management is all about. The ***** about bow hunters and then ***** about the elk destroying all their newly planted trees :)

Utah trespass laws and the case law around it are very specific about the need to post private property. A person can not be prosecuted or have his game confiscated for hunting on private ground that is not posted properly. Unless it's been changed in the last year, that I haven't heard about, boundary's must be clearly marked from above and below. That has never been the case in virtually any area off the top of the crest.

Hunting in and around a big city area like we do, there are always going to be difficult situations. Posting incorrect information doesn't help. If you want some help getting the correct info out about problems that are surely occurring, reach out to the bowhunting groups in the state. Pretty sure there are many folks willing to help educate try to solve issues that might pop up.

Cheers, Pete

It’s important to do your homework and know the area you are hunting. I know of guys that used to hang up no hunting/trespassing signs on public land that they liked to hunt to keep people away. Used to work until OnX changed the rules of the game ?

If the area is private then you cannot hunt it. If it is public lands you cannot shoot within 600 feet of any structure, dwelling, house. Be sure and check the regulations for any unit regulations. The DWR has a long standing practice of setting seasons and regulations without city and county control allowed, The city’s ordinance banning hunting inside its boundaries carries no legal weight on Round Valley or any land within Park city limits open to public access.
Park City is hardly alone in wanting to ban rifle hunting within or near city limits.

“The state has charged municipalities with public safety, but when it comes to hunting, they want to take that totally out of our hands, even though it involves shooting near people’s property,” said Castle Valley Mayor Jazmine Duncan. Her Grand County town recently tried to persuade the Wildlife Board to eliminate all firearms hunting on about 1,500 acres of public land inside the town limits. In a unanimous vote, the board rejected the request, although it agreed to maintain a long-standing ban on rifle hunting on these lands, which remain open to “primitive” weapons, such as bows, muzzleloaders and shotguns.
