River Otter To Make N.M. Comeback?

POSTED: 3:00 PM MST January 9, 2004

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The state Department of Game and Fish is considering reintroducing river otters to the wild in New Mexico.

A supervising biologist for the agency, Bill Dunn, said the animals might benefit river ecosystems. The department plans to ask the state Game Commission at its Jan. 15 meeting whether to proceed with more work needed for the reintroduction.

Dunn said otters once lived in several of the state's larger rivers, but he said the animals were likely never very abundant. The last known wild river otter in New Mexico was trapped in 1953 in the Gila River near Cliff.
