Personally, I'm a Leupold fan. Zeiss is also another good option. I'd suggest you go to a sporting goods store if possible and look through the scopes they have. I also believe you get what you pay for with optics.

For me, as long as it holds zero and is clear enough, that's all I need (especially for hunting). With that said, Nikon scopes have served me well.
A 2-10 power scope or just a plain 10 power should do you fine out to 500 yards. Anything higher is just too shaky for me but give it a try, you might be comfortable with a 4-16 magnification. The price does increase a bit
