Jim Moran Politicizes Virginia Tech Shooting
Suggests Republicans are to blame
By Bluey Posted in Congress

Less than 24 hours after the deadliest shooting spree in U.S. history, liberal Rep. Jim Moran took to the airwaves to launch a political attack against President Bush, congressional Republicans and the National Rifle Association.

Appearing on the "Jack Diamond Morning Show" on 107.3 FM in Northern Virginia, Moran suggested Republicans were to blame for Monday's tragedy at Virginia Tech, which left 33 dead and injured another 30. The anti-gun congressman said Republican policies made it easy for the shooter to obtain a gun.

When the show's host tried to suggest that the gunman may have been hellbent on killing regardless of the law, Moran turned the conversation back to the GOP, complaining that the United States needs a national registry to track all firearms purchases and more stringent gun-control laws. Moran then blamed Bush and Republicans in Congress for opposing such measures at the behest of the NRA.

When I called Moran's press secretary, Austin Durrer, this morning to get an explanation, I was told Durrer wasn't available.

who cares what that guys thinks, hes a very small fish in pool of sharks. . . it's just noise and should not even make the press. . .

Well the anti gunners do give the dems money so what did you expect? It's like the republicans crying about pro choice because these right-to-lifers give them money. That is how the game is played.

This doesn't look like a joke.

I remember recently seeing a post where everyone said they want to see more pictures of women posing in pictures that degrade them and funny jokes. Where are they?

Plese don't try to act smart on here and talk about anything that really matters. We just want more jokes please.

Zigga had a great analogy there, it's all politics. something to think also along those lines the gun control issue will make the dems stronger and they'll be able to protect abortion rights with their power, that make you feel better 202? all of us here know more gun laws won't help but the fact is people want them and polititians who want elected give the people what they want, no surprises here polititians from both sides are vote whores don't act shocked or betrayed .

Aspen for once we agree, some people don't like to think too hard just watch cartoons instead of the news. is there a way they could git rid of that little guy on their computer desk with the sawed off shotgun? you know the one who makes them click on and read all the political post they hate so?

Top court upholds ban on abortion procedure
Partial birth abortions at issue; first time justices ban specific procedure

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long-awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman?s constitutional right to an abortion.
The opponents of the act ?have not demonstrated that the Act would be unconstitutional in a large fraction of relevant cases,? Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion.
The decision pitted the court's conservatives against its liberals, with President Bush?s two appointees, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, siding with the majority.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia also were in the majority.

It was the first time the court banned a specific procedure in a case over how ? not whether ? to perform an abortion.

Abortion rights groups have said the procedure sometimes is the safest for a woman. They also said that such a ruling could threaten most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy, although government lawyers and others who favor the ban said there are alternate, more widely used procedures that remain legal.

Action at state level likely

The outcome is likely to spur efforts at the state level to place more restrictions on abortions.
?
I applaud the Court for its ruling today, and my hope is that it sets the stage for further progress in the fight to ensure our nation?s laws respect the sanctity of unborn human life,? said Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, Republican leader in the House of Representatives.

Said Eve Gartner of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America: ?This ruling flies in the face of 30 years of Supreme Court precedent and the best interest of women?s health and safety. ... This ruling tells women that politicians, not doctors, will make their health care decisions for them.? She had argued that point before the justices.

More than 1 million abortions are performed in the United States each year, according to recent statistics. Nearly 90 percent of those occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and are not affected by Tuesday?s ruling.

Six federal courts have said the law that was in focus Wednesday is an impermissible restriction on a woman?s constitutional right to an abortion.

The law bans a method of ending a pregnancy, rather than limiting when an abortion can be performed.

?Today?s decision is alarming,? Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in dissent. She said the ruling ?refuses to take ... seriously? previous Supreme Court decisions on abortion.
Ginsburg said the latest decision ?tolerates, indeed applauds, federal intervention to ban nationwide a procedure found necessary and proper in certain cases by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.?

She was joined by Justices Stephen Breyer, David Souter and John Paul Stevens.

Skull destroyed in procedure
The procedure at issue involves partially removing the fetus intact from a woman?s uterus, then crushing or cutting its skull to complete the abortion.

Abortion opponents say the law will not reduce the number of abortions performed because an alternate method ? dismembering the fetus in the uterus ? is available and, indeed, much more common.

In 2000, the court with key differences in its membership struck down a state ban on partial-birth abortions. Writing for a 5-4 majority at that time, Breyer said the law imposed an undue burden on a woman?s right to make an abortion decision.
The Republican-controlled Congress responded in 2003 by passing a federal law that asserted the procedure is gruesome, inhumane and never medically necessary to preserve a woman?s health. That statement was designed to overcome the health exception to restrictions that the court has demanded in abortion cases.
But federal judges in California, Nebraska and New York said the law was unconstitutional, and three appellate courts agreed. The Supreme Court accepted appeals from California and Nebraska, setting up Wednesday?s ruling.

More from majority ruling

Kennedy acknowledged continuing disagreement about the procedure within the medical community. In the past, courts have cited that uncertainty as a reason to allow the disputed procedure.

But Kennedy said that ?the law need not give abortion doctors unfettered choice in the course of their medical practice.?
He said the more common abortion method, involving dismemberment, is beyond the reach of the federal ban.

While the court upheld the law against a broad attack on its constitutionality, Kennedy said the court could entertain a challenge in which a doctor found it necessary to perform the banned procedure on a patient suffering certain medical complications.

Doctors most often refer to the procedure as a dilation and extraction or an intact dilation and evacuation abortion.
The law allows the procedure to be performed when a woman?s life is in jeopardy.

The cases are Gonzales v. Carhart, 05-380, and Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood, 05-1382.

Who is acting shocked and betrayed, sounded like Tfinal to me.

I have no idea what you were trying to convey in your second sentence.????

hdude,
Your probably right, most of us here know that more gun laws will not solve this problem. But we are a minority when you look at the public as a whole. The fact of the matter is that the general public hears on the radio and watches on television every single day that these acts could have been prevented if we had more strict gun laws. After a while they start to believe it, regardless of how false these statements actually are. Once the general public has been convinced, more and more gun laws is what you will have.

I agree with you but this case looks terrible, they say he just bought these guns a few days before the shooting. I'm as pro gun as anyone but this looks bad, real bad. no polititian is going to stand to firm on gun rights with 32 dead kids just killed by a wack job who days before bought his weapons for the job in a legal fashion . we'll see some legislation out of this and it's not anyone's fault but the cull who pulled the trigger, the dems are giving people what they want and we're out numbered so look out.

Dude,

This is what I was talking about 2 weeks ago. You want to support liberal agendas beware...

The Dems are the ones that are going after your gun rights.

The dems are going to do what the voters tell them to do, this has put gun control front and center and the people will be heard. to blame the dems is to blame our system and deny there are anti gun feelings amoung many Americans, if you want to blame someone blame the creep who killed these kids. I don't want or like it but in our system majority rules, that's good sometimes and bad others. niether party is right on every issue, this is one where I part ways with the dems but they're going to make some headway on gun control now and expect their anti gun funding to sky rocket. the constitution will give us some cover but this is a bad day for gun owners, a black eye will be the least we can hope for out of this mess.
