How can they want to tax beer? Especially with the need to drown our sorrows? :)

Outrage brewing over proposed 1,900% beer tax hike

Lawmakers say tax will help budget; brewers warn of lost jobs

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Five Oregon state lawmakers want to impose a hefty tax on beer and have introduced a bill that brewers say would cripple them.

Four Portland legislators joined a Springfield senator to introduce Oregon House Bill 2461, which would impose a $49.61 tax on each barrel of beer produced by Oregon brewers.

$1.50 more, or just 15 cents?

?If that tax is passed it would mean consumers would pay $315 million more (in 2009) to buy the same amount of beer they bought in 2008," De Kalb claimed. "A pint of beer would go from $4.50 to $6.?

Rep. Ben Cannon, one of the bill's sponsors, questions whether the true hit to consumers would be as high as beer makers claim. He told KGW his office measured the increase at 15 cents per glass not $1.50.

But Kurt Widmer of Widmer brewing told KGW that in order to keep profit margins constant, he'd increase his price to distributors, who in turn would likely increase prices to retailers, making the 15 cent per class estimate unrealistic.

If that means Oregon will collect $315 million more in 2009, then they will spend it plus $2 billion more on top of that.

I don't drink beer, so I don't care.

The point is there will never be enough money to satisfy any government.

Obama raised the Federal tax on a pack of smokes by $.62 to provide free health care for all the kids of all the dead beat parents.

I would prefer to see CA. tax wine at one dollar per bottle just to piss off the yuppie wine and cheese crowd that is always for taxing smokes.
If it deserves one sin tax, might as well have another on wine to fight alcoholism. Taxing all alcohol would not bother me either.

Nemont, that is unamerican and would have a negative impact on my monthly budget.LOL! It will never happen as Oregon has way to many micro breweries.

I also doubt it will fly, but as desparate as government is for money these days who knows.

Beer is for girls anyway, as long as they leave wiskey alone who cares.

I don't know about that but I do enjoy whiskey as well. Hell I even like a good wine now and again.

Is substance abuse that big of a problem in Oregon?

Well most of the central and southeastern part of the state are , or should I say used to be Irish Catholic so you can do the math. fun people to grow up around but booze was a staple in every house.

This beer deal is all about money, the state is broke and looking for revenue. this is why I always vote against any sin tax like tobacco even though I don't use it, Pepsi will be a sin when they need the money bad enough.
