Tag Transfer

Have a friend that drew a NM NR elk tag. He is worried he may not be able to make the trip due to business obligations. Can he transfer the tag to someone.

Yes, but only to a youth that has special needs.

If he were medically compromised, it can be more his choice.

Edit: the WW program may be new.

It's my understanding you cannot choose who you transfer it to. You can turn it back in, without a refund, and NMDGF will pass it along to a list of candidates (for example, make a wish, wounded warrior).

If you could choose who to transfer it to, everybody would have their grandma, uncle, deaf aunt, etc. apply for tags and have whoever draws give them the tag.

I do believe in the case of death it may be transferred to immediate family member.

Bottom line, call NMDGF and ask the details first hand.

Carl I've transferred tags before due to unexpected surgeries . If a tag holder is deployed due to military obligations , or has a medical reason backed up by a physician of course ,you may indeed pick who you transfer it to.
The catch is if it was drawn in the resident pool it must go to a resident, if it was drawn as a nr it must go to a nr.

I know people who have transferred tags to people of their choice. It has to be medically related, and the hunt cannot have started.

Turned one in two years ago. Had no choice on whom I wanted to transfer it to. G and F transferred it to a youth which I was comfortable with. Similar to post by Smarba above!

On another note his guide said that currently if you fly into NM you have to quarantine for 14 days. Wonder how that is going to work out for NR coming to the State.

The deep state is alive and well in NM. There is a governor in charge with task forces doing surveillance on travel into the state via airport and Facebook postings of residents leaving and coming back. Also watching people's movements via their tracking on smart phones.

Supposed to isolate even if you drive, because in her words, "you're bringing the virus with you". This chick has been watching too many episodes of 'The Walking Dead' and is starting to think it's all real.

If I were a non resident and my hunt was compromised by these "mandates", I'd be giving game and fish a call requesting a full refund including app fee...

I'd absolutely do the same ! Even better than that I'd just put up the middle finger and come n hunt. She's not a real dictator

Yup go hunting and the hell with those socialist rules. WTF what’s safer Than hunting in the woods with a guide. Non residents just need to be smart and say yes I quarantined for 14 before my hunt if they are asked.

Anyone coming into the state (or leaving for that matter) turn your phone tracking GPS/WiFi setting to 'OFF'.

I know it messes up the ability to use apps like onX Maps, but...

I don't believe I've seen any detailed specifications of what is considered "suitable quarantine" wouldn't a tent or camp in the deep woods be suitable for self quarantine?? That's what I would do... Hell now that I think about it, I've been "Quarantining" every September for the past 20+ years!!!

There is a conflict between the misguided health order in NM and the CDC.

No surprise since NM is 15 to 20 years behind everyone else.

The guidelines for tag transfers are fairly specific and rigidly controlled. I'm actually going through the process now with my son.
I spoke with a Lisa Brejcha in Santa Fe to get the ball rolling, and in the end our correspondence has listed
1. Melody Gonzales, 505-476-8164
2. Chad Nelson, 505-476-8072
As points of contact.

The allowable reasons for transfer are:
Death, major medical (with doctors verification), or military duty (with orders, or Commanders verification).

I fall under the third category. My wife and I got skunked on this years draw, I managed a leftover archery deer tag, but my son managed a Bull Elk tag of a lifetime, really premier unit, but sadly he will be on orders throughout the hunt period and can't get leave.
Fortunately the state will allow him to transfer that tag to me as we fall within those limited categories.

As previously mentioned, most others will either end up just "eating" the tag, or can designate it be donated to a number of charities.

Your friend can call the numbers I listed and plead his case, but should that fail, I would urge you to suggest he consider one of the veterans organizations within the state. The one I'm a part of just organized a deer hunt for a terminally ill veteran, so they really do good work for folks that have given to our nation,

Good luck to your friend.
