Anybody hunting San Carlos turkeys this year? I'll be up the second season, then on the early season in 27.

I missed out on the 2008 spring hunt but I already received my 2009 spring tag for the 2nd hunt. This will be my first time hunting on the rez even though I was born and raised in AZ.

My 11 year old son and I drew springs tags this year in the statewide draw. However, my 10 year old son did not, so I am going to sign over my tag to him so both my boys can hunt. The three of us are hooked on spring turkey. To say the least.

Good luck on your hunt this year and let me know how you did. Maybe you can point us in a good direction?

There's a bunch of turkeys up there and they tend to be a little dumber than the public land birds further north. Hilltop area, Maylay Gap, and Natanes Plateau are all good areas. Birds can be spotty and can be flocked up still, as the season starts pretty early up there. If you're not seeing fresh sign and/or hearing gobbles, ya need to move. I like the later season, as you might get snow during the early one, and that's bad for business. Don't overlook the oaks and edges of the PJ where junipers meet up with the ponderosas.

I've probably hunted up there for 12 different spring seasons, and killed 10 birds up there since I took my first turkey up there in 1983. The two tags I didn't fill both involved snow and cold weather. The birds were there, they just don't cooperate too much in that stuff.

I am really addicted to hunting turkeys in the spring. Just like elk during the rut, but I can actually draw a tag!
