Unit 192 Nevada

I've managed to draw a non-resident mule deer tag for unit 192.

Just after some general info on this unit from people who have hunted it before, what deer numbers are like and buck quality.

I'm from Australia so a quick recon trip is a little out of the question.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It's not good. Low deer numbers and poor quality of bucks.
I live in Reno and I wouldn't drive that half hour south to that unit. I never put in for it and neither do any of my friends or family. I can't imagine why anyone would want to travel clear from Australia to a crappy unit like that. Just being honest.

NEXT TIME DONT CANDY COAT IT, GIVE IT TO HIM STRAIGHT!!!!! THIS IS A CLASSIC, I WAS LMAO FOR A FEW MINUTES...???...MADE MY DAY...?????.YD.

Your the only one to pipe up and say it is a crap unit.......perhaps a intelligent man who seems to know so much about other people just doesn't know what deer look like!!

Anyhow thanks for your invaluable info......keep up the good work.?

What makes you think he didn't? It's certainly not the worst unit in NV. Close to the international airport in Reno. Plenty of lodging, too. Rent a Jeep, stay in a casino in SLT and hunt from there. Sounds pretty good to me.

Here are some 192 bucks from last winter. The three smaller ones are average bucks for that area but the front one is a giant for there. The problem is he never leaves the subdivision. A person would see way more deer from a golf cart and a jeep in that area.

The problem with this unit is that there are only 2 NR tags given out. It'll be hard to get info on it if guys shot a decent buck. I hunted it around 7 years ago and hunted off of highway 50 I believe it was. There are little portions of public above Genoa that may produce a decent buck. We hunted 4 days in the south part of the unit across from Topaz Lake and my son connected on a young 4x4 the first 10 minutes of the hunt. Only saw one 2x2 the remaining time. I went back and was able to kill a decent deer off of 50. I wouldn't burn that many points again. Get off the roads and find a deer. It shouldn't be that hard but don't expect to kill a 170 type deer. If that is your goal, you may eat your tag. Good luck!

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-16-19 AT 10:57PM (MST)[p]Nice photo buckhorn,
I would be more than happy with the two smaller bucks bedded in the back of the photo......as I don't have the time to scout or knowledge of the area I do not expect to find the bigger boys.

Fingers crossed I can cross paths with something similar.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks Wiszard,

I would be stoked with a young 4x4 as I don't expect to deck a bigger one not being able to put in scouting time.

Thanks for the info mate.

I had the tag along time ago, mabey 15 years ago. Was it the best unit Ive hunted, no. Was it a good hunt, yes. Have things changed since then, my guess is yes. Saw deer plenty of deer then. Go hunt and have fun whatever the outcome may be.

Buckhorn.....hilarious response. Now, is that info still current and factual for the 2021 season. Put in for that unit because my wife is from Gville and always talked about the Genoa deer. Still looking to arrow my first buck...

I’ve hunted the unit as well and what the guys are saying is spot on. My buddy had archery tag the last 2 years and harvested meat bucks, which is about all he saw. Good luck to ya

Pucci, thx bud. Was yours or you buddy the early or late season archery? Going up in a few weeks to visit family and put boots on the ground. Is the east or west side of the Ridgeline preferred? Any use of a utv to get into some spots? I plan on hiking (military guy here) so not afraid of the miles. Will probably camp up there too.

I had the late archery tag last year and it was tough hunt if you are looking for mature bucks. I cant see Buckhorns pictures but i know of a real nice buck that was living in genoa. We stopped to take pictures of said buck and the game warden was called on us. It was quite the comical experience. Buckhorn is not wrong and knows the area well. There are some decent bucks but if you don't know how to navigate the private land in the right places it is difficult. I got 2 stocks on a mature buck in 7 or so days and they were in the same day and I screwed them up. He wouldn't have scored well. If you aren't used to climbing from high elevation to higher elevation in the thousands of feet you are trouble. Saw and chased bucks every day though.

I live right where you drew.
deer numbers low
Most on private land so the ones that are around here are fairly large.
Most land owners around the base of the sierras turn there nose to hunters. there’s public land and trails all over the sierras right behind there property. Use onX or similar to find property lines.
cut to the east side of the valley is the pine nut mts. I see deer and sign all the time. Roads all over the mountain but some private throughly. extremely low hunting pressure due to limited amount of tags. ie low deer numbers. Water is plentiful. The black bears ndow captures at Lake Tahoe and the basin they relocate to the pine nuts. There has been a bear season here since 2011. So the mountains hold animals but this is not an area you can just drive to and start hunting. I would try calling the few bear guides here and see if they can point you to someone or get you on private alfalfa fields.

Simple, awesome photo. I glassed up some bucks a few weeks ago when there. You are right, the private is an issue and people are not hunter friendly lol. I went up to Genoa Peak, but it was really hot and didn't see anything. Did see a bear while hiking above Genoa. Didn't the Pine Nuts burn bad last year? I didn't even think to look there. Also, not sure I understand your advice regarding the bear guides, do you know of any?

Also, Pine Nuts are not in 192, was looking here as a possible back up. Your yard looks like a great spot too ?

Check out
There’s the whole Sierra crest trail that has trails to all the hidden mountains lakes. access from all the major highway routes. Just have to dodge the antis. But it’s the national forest so yeah.
