Unit 74

Does anybody hunt 74 anymore. Elk or deer. Haven’t seen really any posts in forever. Don’t want any specific info. Just wondering and hoping maybe somebody will post some pictures, maybe a story.

It’s gone way downhill for deer.

Archery hunted it in 2019. Saw deer everyday. No giants. Stalked 2 150-160 bucks. Saw 3 bull elk and a lot of cows.

Never hunted 74 but my wife & i hunt 44 alot

I hunted it for deer this last season, with a muzzleloader. We hunted above timberline in some of the most remote parts of the unit. Never saw another hunter in the backcountry. Saw very few deer. None I was willing to pack off the mountain. Saw a handful of elk above timberline. Place was crawling with people in the roaded areas. Beautiful country, definitely beat sitting home.

Did anyone apply for this unit this year? Have you hunted it for in the past, if so what brought you back to it?

Hiked the Colorado trail thru the unit. Took extra time walking that section to look around at a possible hunt in the future. Came to the conclusion it’s not worth the effort or the points. Saw very few deer and no real size.

The dynamic of high country mule deer hunting has changed significantly in Colorado. It seems that less and less deer summer in the high country much anymore. Along with there are simply less deer.

Has anyone hunted elk in the unit in the last several years? Everyone hears about the declining numbers. Is there still any opportunity for decent elk hunting in the unit? We used to pack in up Hermosa creek and over the years hunted most all of the drainages on both sides of the creek. We killed some decent bulls over the years. Haven’t been there since 2010.
