LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-18 AT 01:53PM (MST)[p]Drew this rifle tag and was curious how the bear hunting will be in a drought year if the forest opens back up by September. I know the monsoons haven't started yet but I assume the drought will affect the acorn crop. The only time I hunted this area was last year after the freeze killed the acorns and wonder how the drought this year will affect the bear hunting. Sw Colorado is the area. Thanks

If acorns more or less fail, they will still be drawn in to isolated water holes and you can always bum a dead elk location off a successful archer if that's your style. That said, I have seen a few BIG black bears up in the high country that time of year. Usually hanging out just below treeline in a wet meadow eating grass, not many but glassing would be a viable strategy. Can't say I have ever seen a small one up that high in September, seem to all be bigger boars.
