Unit 85 Cuchara area

Hey, I am new to the message board and just wanted to get any firsthand knowledge about unit 85 and more specificaly by Cuchara. I killed a 5x5 elk there about 10 years ago and plan on going back this year. I would appreciate any help.

I use to hunt archery there alot, and had a great time. Lots of elk and bears. Unfortunately the secret got out. Way to many people for me. There is still plenty of rough country and plenty of elk, but I would go early archery and that's it. After a few weeks of pressure they head to the private across hwy 12. Good luck.

Hunted 85 for archery elk and rifle deer in '06, close to the Spanish Peaks area, elk activity was very slow. But Rifle Deer we shot some nice ones. Both trips combined we only saw about 8 elk, 7 cows and a little spike.

But, saw 30+ bucks.

Bigshot ~ I put myself and my 13 year old daughter in for this area (unit 85) for 2nd season deer this year. It looks like she may be able to draw a buck tag without any preferenece points, and we live within a couple of hours. If so, would you be willing share some more info, as to where you saw the mojority of deer and the areas that you would recommend for me to take her.
