Velvet Thickness

I found a decent buck during a scouting trip on August 1st that looked like he had good mass. I haven't been able to find anything bigger and have decided it's time to relocate him. How thick is antler velvet towards the end of the summer? Have you ever found a deer during the summer you thought had good mass only to think he didn't after he rubbed?

They almost always look bigger and heavier in the velvet

I saw a buck opening day of the archery hunt in Utah in 2014, that I figured to be low to mid 180s. Big deep forks, 28-29 wide and good mass. Killed him opening day of the muzzy a month later and he dried at 173”. Velvet can be pretty deceiving

From what I've experienced, the more grey the velvet is, the thinner it is and the more orange velvet seems to be thicker.
