I wouldn’t call this rut behavior, that’s a ways off, but they are starting to think about getting laid. The nice bull we saw still has a fine coat of velvet.

I've had a camera on a couple wallows for the last few years and I haven't had a picture of a bull using them in August. Here's one of my earliest pictures of a bull coming out of the mud bath.

I've seen them drink from the wallow during the spring and summer but only actually "wallow" in them during September and October.

You are correct. The majority of MMer’s wallow in self-pity year round.

I watched a couple bulls in the SWD wallow on Aug 28. Only a bugle or two, but wallowed like crazy. Each of them were alone and had no cows at that time.

You ain’t lying! Busting ice with hoofs and antlers…. Then if you manage to get in, you’ll turn your outie into an innie.

And don't forget about tunneling through 6' to 10' of snow before you get to the ice.
