A lone Mexican gray wolf named Anubis was captured by an Arizona Game and Fish Department wildlife biologist on Friday in the Coconino National Forest just north of Flagstaff.

I still believe the Mexican woofs will get to me before the Canadian ones. This dude coulda made it to the house in a couple more days.

Hmm. I don't know much about Mexican wolves, but if they are anything like their northern cousins, the males can travel LONG distances. They constantly find wolves from Wyoming way outside of the recovery zone, even in other states. Flagstaff is just a day's jog for a wolf outside of Mex wolf zone. It's gonna happen again and again- are they gonna capture and relocate them every time? If they did that in Wyoming, it would be a full time crew. I think Wyoming has a two-tier approach- game animals in a large area (intended for full population) and predatory status outside that area. I'm certain there aren't enough Mex wolves to handle it that way, but catching every wandering wolf seems silly.

The one they captured probably isn't the only one that has wanderin' on its mind.

A while back, someone claimed to have sighted a wolf next to the 461 road on the N. Kaibab. Given the terrain a Mex. wolf would have to negotiate, I deemed it unlikely & probably just a coyote.

I laugh when humans use man made boundaries to control animals.

....."Hey Sammy, isn't that fence line the Montana border"
...."Yup, you're right"
...."Well, we better stop and turn around"

In a testament to how far wolves can travel, the center of the area is approximately 200 miles south of where Anubis was captured.

Question how big is the area 200 mile from CENTER that means he could be 1 mile from the edge of area they have turn them loose in. Could the whole area be a 400 mile sq area????

He was on the 5-ring on a target.

Math and geography aren’t most reporters and pr types strength. If you are asking, he was supposed to stay in the eastern side of the state but wandered half way to Vegas.

I can’t remember for sure, but it seems like they turned them loose over in Blue River. Been around those parts a fair share and never saw one.

Tis true. But the boundaries of the recovery area are widespread, encompassing more than 98 MILLION acres.

Wasn't that a Canadian wolf? Was it the one that someone posted the picture of on the Bab?
