My wife drew areas 72 &74 I drew area 231 both non-residents bull elk tags. Which area should we hunt first, we intend to spend the full season there as this is a once in a lifetime chance, took me 13 years to draw. What a problem to have.

FIRST, CONGRADULATIONS ON "TWO" BULL TAGS! I AM ASSUMING THESE ARE NV 072,074 AND 231 PIOCHE RIFLE TAGS???
YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER FORMING TWO SEPARATE HUNTING PARTIES, IF THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE THEN I WOULD HUNT 072,074 FIRST AS THIS SEASON STARTS 3 DAYS PRIOR TO 231 (OCT. 29 VS NOV.1) ALSO THE WEATHER WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE 072, 074 WILL GET THE STORMS FIRST USUALLY AS THEY ARE FARTHER NORTH, ALSO A LARGE PART OF 072,074 ARE NAT'L FOREST , SO VEHICLE ACCESS WILL BE LIMITED IN SOME AREAS. HORSES AND MULES WOULD BE A BIG HELP IN 072,074, WHILE 231 MAY BE BETTER ACCESSED BY ATV (FOR RETRIEVAL) IN SOME PARTS.
THE LAST TIME I WAS AT 074 THE ELK WERE JUST NORTH OF THE WILDCAT GUARD STATION, FOLLOW THE ROAD NORTH OF THERE UNTIL IT ENDS, THEN GLASS THE THE BOWL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF SUN CREEK. THERE WERE 200 PLUS ELK WHEN I SAW THEM 2YRS AGO AND QUITE A FEW QUALITY BULLS, AGAIN THE WEATHER AND HUNT PRESSURE MAY MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE BUT THATS WHERE I WOULD START.
I WIL BE IN 231 NEAR THE HERMITAGE FROM NOV 1-18 AS BOTH MY WIFE AND I HAVE RIFLE BULL TAGS THERE. WHEN YOU GET TO 231 IF IM STILL THERE AND HAVE FOUND THE ELK I WILL POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION TO SAVE SOME TIME. IF IM ALREADY SUCCESSFUL BEFORE YOU GET THERE THEN YOU CAN CALL ME IF YOU WANT FOR HELP. WE CAN EXCHANGE #S AFTER YOUR REPLY IF YOU WANT.
GOOD LUCK!
NVHUNTERER
P.S. THIS MAY BE A ONCE IN A LIFETIME HUNT, SO BE PREPARED TO SPEND THE WHOLE TIME HUNTING

NVHUNTERER, you say there are total 72 tags for elk in the 231,241,242 area.I am reading my regs and see only 3 NR rifle bulls but no number for Res rifle bulls. As bigmoosies wife is my cousin and I hope to be involved in their hunts I am inerested in knowing how many bull elk hunters will be there while we will be. Thanks Louie

Nvhunterer, no We didn't catch anything yesterday. We had a lot of rain and the water was high and muddy, will probably go again tomorrow. Hunted 231 a couple of years ago for deer saw a lot of very nice elk a few up high but most down low in the cedars, yes you are right they were using the burns a lot. Hope your scouting goes well, as we live in Alaska scouting is not an option for us, this is why I was hoping to get a few tips from some of the MM members, not their honey holes just some general starting points. And to Elmacho yes this is big glass country.Good luck to everyone
