Wild Horse adoptions.....

I read a similar article today too. I guess I have three thoughts:

1) For any given system, someone will figure out a way to game it

2) The BLM really should've never been made responsible for managing these horses. It should be blatantly obvious that they're way out of their depth.

3) Because of this, the rangeland damage the horses have already caused from the Book Cliffs to the Cali border is nothing short of catastrophic.

What a great way to get rid of a bunch of otherwise worthless range damaging horses!

Good for the BLM.
I’m sure it’s cheaper than keeping them in holding corrals.
They also need to make room for much needed future round ups.

What a great way to create jobs and boost the economy.
Many industries will be hiring workers because of this need to process horses.

Get them off the rangeland!!!!

Until The Liberal/GREENIE BS Started!

We Had Cowboys Rounding Them Up!

And Yes They Were Mostly Being Sold at the Auction!

Most of Them guys Are Dead Now!

GLUE Comes From The Store Don't You Know?

A Perty Good Number of them Feral Horses Were Rounded up on The South Slope in Recent Years!

Don't Know What They Did with them?

I like this gem:

We've bought and sold half a dozen or more and the wife has trained herself..2 even went to Germany...but can't keep up with the population explosion of them..they got to do something..and yes I have a donkey also that I pack deer out with now...Don't need an alarm clock with a donkey around..

I love how all the groups are against killing them but offer no solution to the problem. Sooner or later something will have to give, if they keep letting the population explode in the end there will be no option but a mass slaughter.

Similar to cougars, wolves, grizzlies. Once the *lovers" get involved, it only leads to destruction

It’s funny. A lot of the people that defend these animals are ones that claim to believe in science. Just like the science in global warming and vaccines. Ask them to discuss the science where having non native animals in an ecosystem is a positive thing.

I'm still waiting for how dumping horses in the desert is any different than dumping kittens "on the farm".

Do we,slaughter cattle, ring neck pheasants
Several species,of waterfowl fish ?
I mean you said, non native, animals, were bad for the ecosystem. Pheasants, cattle and certain fish and fowl are not native species,to the U.S

That’s where I’m biased. I like buying hamburger for less than $10 a pound so I will accept having cattle out there and I support socialism where the government gives ranchers and farmers money to control the costs a little. But horses, burros, dogs, cats and other invasive birds like the Eurasian dove? It should be an easy decision to kill those off. Most places I go now are taken over with tumble weeds and we didn’t have any monsoon last year in Arizona. I don’t think it will get better anytime soon, so get rid of those that don’t make life out there easy on the native animals or animals that help our economy.

Those animals don't tear up everything!

Ultimately,

How do you see this ending? Should they just let the population keep growing and hope it comes to a head at some point? Keep trying to round them up? I don’t think either is a good idea but perhaps you do or have a different idea.
Wether we want to admit it or not we are the stewards of the land, and we need to determine what is best for humans and at the same time conservation. Of the other animals you mentioned cows are the most destructive, but at least on public land they are controlled. Wether the numbers out there are too much is open for debate but the fact of the matter is we need cows. We need to be able to feed ourselves. There are certainly fish species that are also problematic and all could be debated. You will have to enlighten me on what damage pheasants are doing to the land though?

Interesting point of view ty

Ive seen first hand, what an animal goes through when a vet ethanizes it,its not a
Pretty sight that's why I put mine, down myself
That’s BS…..they get a sedative first and literally go to sleep. If not, you should go to a real vet.

New for 2022 BLM now paying you $1000 to adopt a wild horse, cannot wait for the comments on this great use BLM funds. They could sell them off and make money to help the habit and water sources they wreck but whatever.

It’s not a new program, it’s been around awhile and last year there were horse trailers a mile long at the BLM corrals south of Rock Springs after the big round up, lining up claim up to 4 horses each so they can get their $1000. They pay you half at the 6 month point and the other half after an inspector eyeballs the horse at the 1 year point. Funny thing is after everyone collected their $1000 the horses disappeared. Rumor has it the slaughter auctions were quite busy for a few weeks and lots of dog food was produced. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/15/us/wild-horses-adoptions-slaughter.html

Ok I just saw it was a recent article, I bet that is what the BLM knew would happen anyway but did not want to do it themselves and have to hear about it. It did put money back in the economy in two ways then.

Had these guys show up out north of Phx while shooting some test loads the other day. We see them out there all the time but never had them so stupid before. I actually had to stop shooting for about 15 minutes while they fed their way across behind my target. This was my first BLM protest. Yes, I was prepared to defend myself, but I was able to restrain myself. It just ain't worth the felony conviction to shoot a stupid burro.
Wasn't always that way. Back in the late 60's we used to shoot em fairly often. There wasn't near as many back then. But it became a felony, so we quit. Yes, as I recall, Burro tenderloin is actually pretty good on the bbq. Dogs liked it too.

ODW, did you ever have the pleasure to meet Dale Dundas? He was the Hunter Education Coordinator with the AZGF.
He had some pretty entertaining stories about "the good ole days". That was back in 1969-1971.
If anyone cares to see all the "wild" burros you want to see, just go out to Lake Pleasant North of Phx. It is really sad to see how much damage they have done out there.

Dale Dundas? Now that's a blast from the past. He was there when I was a volunteer instructor.

My mind is a bit addled this morning. Who was the politician who got nabbed for shooting a burro? I seem to recall his name started with an S.

Your mind is in a lot better shape than mine! Sam Stieger seems to come to mind. I could not find the exact details online but there was a reference to an event in 1975.
Yep, Dale Dundas was our instructor way back when I took hunter safety in high school. He was sharing a story about "back in the day" they used to shoot burros like jackrabbits. Nothing illegal about it! He then added the caution that it was now illegal to do it. My buddy and I looked at each other & realized it was time to change our evil ways.
I have a book by P.O. Ackley, copyright 1962, named "HANDBOOK FOR SHOOTERS and RELOADERS. In the chapter under "Killing Power", he describes various theories about bullet velocity, construction, and caliber. There are several examples, with photos, of burros that were taken.
It is fun to share these stories. I get the impression that many of the younger folks on this website don't realize how much times have changed.

That was him!! Thanks for jogging my memory. Steiger was a congressman at the time. If I remember that incident correctly, they were actually privately owned burros, not wild ones & he claimed self-defense.
