(Winston-AP) -- The federal government has fatally shot an endangered Mexican gray wolf that has killed several calves.
The wolf, known as Alpha Female 592, was killed Tuesday after she wandered onto a Catron County ranch and attacked.
The four-year-old had been captured in 2001 because she killed five calves.
She was re-released deep in the Gila Wilderness last month.
But a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman, Victoria Fox, says the wolf quickly made her way to the ranch and attacked another calf.
She says officials tried to capture the wolf but it eluded their attempts.
Fox says the endangered wolf was the first to be shot by the government.
