Zeiss binoculars help!

I purchased a pair of Zeiss Conquest 12x45 and can't tell that much of a difference between my Zeiss and my Nikon Action EX 10x50 except for the $$$ out of my pocket!! I wonder why? I'm been comparing by trying to read my street sign at the end of the road; around 220 yards, and judging the clarity of the letters.

Try it either in early morning and/or late evening and see if you can tell any difference with the light gathering at these times.
